The same approach as with whisky
Van Wees in Amersfoort has been bottling individual whisky casks under the name The Ultimate for decades. Since 2016 they have done the same with rum: buying casks from distilleries in the Caribbean and bottling them undiluted or at 46 percent, without colouring and without chill filtration.
The origins range from Barbados and Jamaica to Venezuela and Guyana. From the same house we also stock The Ultimate whisky.

Van Wees in Amersfoort is best known in the Netherlands for The Ultimate: a whisky series with hundreds of bottlings from single casks. Ultimatum is the same idea, applied to rum.
The casks come from distilleries you see on the label (Barbados, Jamaica, Venezuela) and sometimes from houses that may not be named. The latter is common in the rum world.
Some bottlings get another period in a different cask after arriving in the Netherlands, for example a sherry hogshead or a wine cask.
Bottling single casks: first whisky, since 2016 also rum.
Where best to start
The Selected is the most accessible: a blend, not too expensive, and a good introduction to the house style.
