How long does rum keep after opening?
Rum does not spoil in terms of food safety. Under the labelling rules, drinks with 10% alcohol or more do not need a best-before date, and rum legally has at least 37.5%. What does change is the flavour: ethanol and aroma compounds evaporate from an opened bottle, and the less there is in the bottle, the more air there is above it.
In brief
The key figures
| Best-before date | Not mandatory for drinks with 10% alcohol or more |
|---|---|
| Minimum alcohol content of rum | 37.5% vol under Regulation (EU) 2019/787 |
| What disappears | Ethanol and volatile aroma compounds evaporate from an open bottle |
| Role of the air | The emptier the bottle, the larger the layer of air above the rum |
| Storage | Upright, in the dark, at room temperature, cap or cork firmly closed |
| Sweetening | Rum may contain at most 20 grams of sweetening per litre |
| Flavouring | Rum is not flavoured; flavoured variants go by another name |
| Age limit | NIX18: geen alcohol onder de 18 jaar, Alcoholwet artikel 20 |
Why is there no best-before date on a bottle of rum?
Drinks with an alcohol content of 10% or more are among the foods for which a best-before date is not mandatory.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority lists these drinks among the exceptions, alongside wine, fresh fruit and vegetables, vinegar, salt and sugar, among others. With at least 37.5% alcohol, rum is well above that threshold. So the absence of a date does not mean it has been forgotten, but that the regulations do not require one.
What changes in an opened bottle of rum?
From an open or half-full bottle, ethanol and some of the aroma and flavour compounds escape through evaporation.
That is what the entry on oxidation in the Oxford Companion to Spirits & Cocktails, written by Doug Frost, says. It does not make the drink unsafe; the lightest aroma and flavour compounds are simply the first to go. With a bottle you finish within a few months, you will rarely notice. With a bottle that stands half full in the cupboard for years, you will.
Does it matter how much rum is left in the bottle?
Yes, because in an almost empty bottle a large layer of air sits above a small amount of rum, and that speeds up the change.
What counts is the ratio of air to liquid, not the time since opening. If you want to keep the last bit, pour it into a smaller bottle that you fill almost to the top. A ten or twenty centilitre bottle with a good closure works well for this.
How do you best store an opened bottle of rum?
Stand the bottle upright in a dark place at room temperature and screw the closure firmly shut after every pour.
Upright means the rum is not constantly in contact with the cork or cap. Dark and at an even temperature means light and heat do not speed up the change. The fridge is not necessary. An ordinary cupboard, out of the sun and not next to the cooker, is enough.
Does the same apply to rum liqueur and spiced rum?
No, because such bottles contain more sugar and often less alcohol, which makes them more sensitive than pure rum.
Regulation (EU) 2019/787 stipulates that rum is not flavoured and may contain at most 20 grams of sweetening per litre. A flavoured or heavily sweetened bottle therefore falls into a different category, with its own requirements for alcohol and sugar. If such a bottle does carry a best-before date, follow it.

Short answer
Short answers to related questions
- Can you keep rum in the fridge?
- There is no need. A dark cupboard at room temperature is enough.
- How long does an unopened bottle of rum keep?
- Unopened and kept in the dark, rum keeps for years; no best-before date is required.
- Does rum improve in the bottle?
- Rum matures in the cask, not in the bottle. After bottling, the only changes come from air and evaporation.
- What do you do with an almost empty bottle?
- Pour the rest into a smaller bottle, so there is less air above the drink.
- Should you store rum upright?
- Yes. That way the spirit is not constantly in contact with the cork or cap.
