Buffalo Trace alongside Rocky Patel Decade Robusto
A Kentucky straight bourbon alongside a Honduran robusto. Molasses and aniseed against a dark, spicy wrapper.

From the shelf
The bottle
Buffalo Trace is a Kentucky straight bourbon from the United States, at 40 percent alcohol by volume. The colour is deep amber. The nose is complex, with vanilla, mint and molasses; on the palate pleasantly sweet with brown sugar, the spiciness of oak, toffee, dark fruit and aniseed, with a long finish.
The combination
Why this works together
The Decade is a 127 mm robusto under a dark wrapper from Ecuador. It gives black pepper and earth on top of a sweet core. Bourbon at 40 percent ABV is softer than most malts and would vanish under a truly heavy cigar, but the molasses and dark fruit here are emphatic enough to carry the pepper. The aniseed in the finish is what keeps the two apart.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Rocky Patel Decade Robusto Honduran robusto of 127 mm with a dark wrapper: pepper and earth next to molasses and aniseed.
- Oliva Serie O Robusto Nicaraguan robusto of 127 mm, slightly drier and woodier.
- Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Robusto Grande Heavier and more peppery, for those who want the cigar front and centre.
- Ashton Aged Maduro No. 20 Dark broadleaf wrapper with coffee and sweet wood, closer to the cask influence of the bourbon.
In the glass
