Clynelish 14 Years Old next to Juan López Selección No. 2
A Highland malt with a waxy, peppery finish, alongside a dry Cuban robusto. Pepper against pepper, with seaweed in between.

From the shelf
The bottle
Clynelish is in the Highlands, on the east coast. This single malt is bottled at 46 percent alcohol by volume and is deep gold in colour. The nose brings light sea aromas, a hint of smoke and soft fruit; in the mouth creamy and fruity with malt, smoke, grapes and seaweed. The finish is long and peppery, with fruit and vanilla, and quickly turns drier.
The combination
Why this works together
Among the Cuban houses, Juan López is dry and spicy without the heavy earth of Bolívar or Partagás. A robusto of 124 mm holds that tone evenly. Alongside a malt that already has pepper in its own finish, what matters above all is that the salt and seaweed of Clynelish set something different against it; the same pepper twice without salt would turn flat.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Juan López Selección No. 2 Cuban robusto of 124 mm, dry and spicy, set against the pepper in the finish.
- Vegas Robaina Famosos Robusto of 124 mm with more earth, closer to the smoke tone in the whisky.
- Partagás Serie D No. 5 Petit robusto of 110 mm, heavier and shorter, for those who do not want to go on as long.
- E.P. Carrillo Encore Dominican robusto with pepper and cedar wood, as a counterweight to the seaweed.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46 percent by volume a few drops of water bring out the vanilla. Take each sip after the smoke has left your mouth.
