Bottle of Connemara 12 Years Old Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey, whisky

From the shelf

The bottle

Connemara is a peated single malt from Ireland. This twelve-year-old matured in oak casks and has 40 percent alcohol by volume. The peat smoke is there, but softer than on Islay: underneath are almond, citrus and sea salt, and the finish is dry with a little pepper.

The combination

Why this works together

Smoke next to smoke adds up, which is why this only works with a whisky whose peat is restrained. That is the case here, certainly at 40 percent by volume. The Epicure No. 2 brings an earthy, slightly coffee-like smoke that goes in a different direction from the sweetish peat, and the little pepper note in the finish returns in the wrapper.

The cigar

We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

This is what the size of Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 looks like: robusto format, short and thick. This is our own drawing in our house style, not a photo of the brand; we do not sell cigars.

  • Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 Cuban robusto of moderate strength; earthy and slightly coffee-like, and light enough to stay beside peat.
  • Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 1 Longer, same house style and the same light touch; for a sit of well over an hour.
  • Quai d’Orsay No. 54 A thick but soft Cuban, woody and without sharp pepper.
  • Rafael González Petit Coronas Mild and short, for those who want the peat clearly in the foreground.

In the glass

Serving

Neat in a tulip-shaped glass, without ice; cold dampens peat and then little is left. Water is not needed at 40 percent by volume. Taste first without smoke, so you know how heavy the peat is before the tobacco joins in.
