Bottle of Glenfarclas 15 Years Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, whisky

From the shelf

The bottle

Glenfarclas sits at the foot of Ben Rinnes in Speyside and is still in family hands. This fifteen-year-old matured in sherry casks and is at 46 percent by volume. On the nose oak and plenty of sherry with vanilla; in the mouth round and firm, with malt sweetness and a long, lightly smoky finish.

The combination

Why this works together

The Serie D No. 4 is one of the sturdier Cuban robustos, with earth, cocoa and clear pepper. That pepper needs sweetness so it does not turn dry, and here that sweetness comes from the sherry cask. The 46 percent by volume keeps the whisky from sinking beneath the smoke; at 40 it would.

The cigar

We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

This is what the size of the Partagás Serie D No. 4 looks like: robusto format, short and thick. This is our own drawing in our house style, not a photo from the brand; we do not sell cigars.

  • Partagás Serie D No. 4 Full-bodied Cuban robusto, earthy and peppery; the sherry sweetness catches that pepper.
  • Partagás Serie E No. 2 Thicker and longer from the same house, with the same spicy streak; for a longer sit.
  • Bolívar Royal Corona One of the sturdier Cuban robustos, earthy and powerful enough alongside a sherry-rich malt.
  • Ramón Allones Specially Selected Full and dark-fruited; a little rounder than the Partagás and therefore closer to the cask.

In the glass

Serving

Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46% ABV a few drops of water can broaden the sherry tone, which helps against this cigar. Taste first without smoke and then drink each time after the smoke has left the mouth.
