The bottle

Millstone comes from Zuidam Distillers in Baarle-Nassau. This single malt is twelve years old, matured in sherry casks and is bottled at 46 percent by volume. The finish is long, with oak and vanilla that keep returning; the sherry cask puts dried fruit beneath it.

The combination

Why this works together

A dark broadleaf wrapper has fermented for longer and therefore gives coffee, earth and a sweet woody note sooner than pepper. That woody note lies close to what the sherry cask gives the whisky, so the two meet on the same note. The risk here is not a clash but sameness; the 46 percent ABV keeps enough tension to prevent that.

  • Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Honduran robusto under a dark Connecticut broadleaf; coffee and sweet wood alongside the sherry cask.
  • Ashton Aged Maduro No. 20 Dominican with the same broadleaf wrapper, slightly milder and smoother in smoke.
  • Oliva Serie O Maduro Nicaraguan maduro, a little more peppery, which makes the whole less uniform.
  • Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 From the same line but with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper: lighter in colour and drier in tone.

In the glass

Serving

Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46 percent ABV, a few drops of water bring out the dried fruit, which actually moves the whisky further away from the cigar. Taste first without smoke and then drink in the pauses between puffs.
