Rittenhouse Straight Rye alongside Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto
An American rye at 50 percent alcohol by volume next to a dark Nicaraguan robusto. Rye pepper against earth and black pepper.

From the shelf
The bottle
Rittenhouse Straight Rye Bottled in Bond comes from the United States and is 50 percent by volume. The nose brings fruit and grains, with dried banana, breakfast cereal and peach; on the palate peach and dried banana with pepper, lighter than many ryes and with a lot of fruit. The finish brings leather, oak and the classic rye spices.
The combination
Why this works together
The Liga Privada No. 9 is a 127 mm robusto with a dark wrapper and a dense filler. The smoke is earthy and peppery and holds that weight to the end. Rye already gives pepper of its own, so this is pepper beside pepper; what keeps them apart is the fruit in this bottle, of which there is unusually much for a rye. Without that fruit the combination would turn flat.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Drew Estate Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto Nicaraguan robusto of 127 mm, earthy and peppery, set against the rye spices.
- Oliva Serie V Double Robusto Robusto of 124 mm, just as full but more woody than earthy.
- Rocky Patel Sungrown Robusto Lighter in tone, so the peach and banana get more room.
- Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Robusto Grande Even more emphatically peppery, for those who do not seek the contrast but the repetition.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 50 percent ABV a few drops of water bring out the fruit, which helps alongside this cigar. Always drink after the smoke has left the mouth.
