Kavalan Single Malt next to Romeo y Julieta Petit Coronas
A Taiwanese single malt alongside a short Cuban petit corona. A bottle of 40 percent by volume calls for a size that does not take over.

From the shelf
The bottle
Kavalan is a distillery in Yilan, in the northeast of Taiwan, built in 2005. It works with meltwater from Snow Mountain and lets its casks mature in the island's warm, humid climate. This single malt is 40 percent by volume.
The combination
Why this works together
A petit corona of 129 mm is slim and short. Romeo y Julieta is floral and woody by nature, without the heavy earth of Bolívar or Partagás. Whisky from a warm climate matures quickly and takes on a lot of cask, but at 40% ABV the alcohol weight stays low. A thick or long cigar would overpower it; this size stays alongside.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Romeo y Julieta Petit Coronas Cuban petit corona of 129 mm, floral and light in weight, alongside a bottle of 40 percent by volume.
- H. Upmann Coronas Junior Petit corona of 110 mm, shorter and drier in tone.
- Macanudo Café Hyde Park Dominican robusto with wood and cream, if the smoke may be a little fuller.
- Davidoff Millennium Blend Robusto Robusto of 127 mm with more pepper, for those who want to bring the cigar to the fore.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass, without ice. At 40 percent ABV water is not needed. Drink it in the pauses between the draws, not during them.
