Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt alongside Cohiba Siglo II
A Japanese blended malt with a light peat note, alongside a Cuban petit corona. Two partners that both keep to half measures.

From the shelf
The bottle
Taketsuru is Nikka’s blended malt, from Japan, at 43 percent ABV. The colour is deep gold. The nose is fruity with lemon, orange and pear, and a light spiciness with some peat; on the palate round and full with malt, sweet spices, cardamom and dried fruits. The finish is lightly bitter, with smokiness and dark chocolate.
The combination
Why this works together
A petit corona of 129 mm is narrow and short: little tobacco comes along at once, so the smoke stays light. Cohiba is grassy and woody, with hardly any earth. This whisky already has a light peat and smoke note of its own; a heavy cigar would pile on top of that and push out the fruit. At this size, the lemon and pear in the nose stay upright.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Cohiba Siglo II Cuban petit corona of 129 mm, light and woody alongside the light peat note of Taketsuru.
- Trinidad Vigía Short, thick size of 110 mm, fuller in smoke but quickly finished.
- H. Upmann Coronas Junior Petit corona of 110 mm, drier in tone, which makes the cardamom stand out.
- Montecristo Petit Edmundo Petit robusto of 110 mm with cocoa, close to the dark chocolate in the finish.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 43 percent alcohol by volume, water is usually not needed. Drink each time once the smoke is out of the mouth, so that the fruit in the aroma stays easy to follow.
