The coachman returns
Vieux is a Dutch spirit that came about as a substitute for cognac. At the end of the nineteenth century Dutch distillers made their own cognac from neutral grain or molasses alcohol with water, caramel and aroma and flavour compounds. The bottle said Hollandse cognac; at the bar you ordered a koetsiertje.
The Wine Decree of 1959 reserved the name cognac for eau-de-vie from the French Charente. The distillers were given two years and from 1 September 1961 it was called vieux, after the French word for old that already appeared on the bottles as a quality designation.
Voerman reverses that history. Where vieux was the cheaper alternative to cognac, this bottle starts precisely from a wood-aged French grape distillate. The name refers to that same history: a voerman is a coachman, and coachman was the nickname for a glass of vieux. We have a limited number in stock.

An old variety, revived
- The brand in brief
- 2020The year the project began.
- SchiedamWhere the bottle is made, at an old family distillery.
- LimousinThe French oak in which the brandy has matured.
- 40%The strength, higher than the usual 35 percent.
Voerman Vieux was devised by drinks journalist Ingmar Voerman and drinks entrepreneur Jos Zonneveld, the man behind the By the Dutch series. The project began in 2020 and got off the ground with a crowdfunding campaign. The bottle is made at one of the oldest family distilleries in Schiedam.
The base is a French grape distillate (brandy) matured in Limousin oak. Distillates and extracts of natural botanicals are added: bittersweet orange, figs, cardamom, cinnamon and ginger root. That puts this bottle closer to a spiced brandy than to the classic vieux on neutral alcohol.
The name is a nod to the history of the style. Voerman is another word for coachman, and ‘koetsier’ (coachman) was the nickname for a glass of vieux. Part of the proceeds goes to the Nationaal MS Fonds.
