The odd one out on this shelf
Pikeurtje Kersen is on our fruit drinks shelf, but it is something different from the rest of that shelf. The label says twelve per cent alcohol. That is less than a liqueur, and much less than a blackcurrant jenever.
The producer, Siebrand in IJsselmuiden, describes it as a fruit wine. So it is not a spirit. Anyone looking for a cherry liqueur is looking for something else; anyone who knows this brand is looking for exactly this.

Why the label says wine
- The bottle at a glance
- Fruit wineThat is what the producer itself calls the product.
- 12%The strength according to the label.
- 100 clThe bottle size.
- IJsselmuidenWhere Siebrand is based, near Kampen.
Pikeurtje is a brand of Siebrand, based on Spoorstraat in IJsselmuiden near Kampen. On its own website the company describes Pikeurtje Kersen as a fresh fruit wine, with twelve per cent alcohol in a one-litre bottle.
That twelve per cent explains why this bottle is different from the rest of this shelf. A liqueur must have at least fifteen per cent alcohol; a blackcurrant jenever is at least twenty. Pikeurtje is below both of those limits and is therefore not called a liqueur.
Why is it with the fruit drinks, then?
Because the shelf is arranged by fruit, not by product type. Blackcurrant, lemon and cherry stand together, whether they are jenever, brandy, liqueur or wine. Handy for finding things, but the label remains decisive: always check the type and the strength.
Siebrand states on its own website that the company is ceasing its business activities. We cannot say what that means for supply in the longer term. The current stock is shown in the online shop.
Blackcurrant jenever, lemon brandy or fruit liqueur?
This shelf holds a mix of different things. It helps to know which is which.
Blackcurrant jenever is jenever in which blackcurrants have steeped, sometimes with raspberries, and usually sweetened with sugar. The colour is wine red and the alcohol content is at least twenty per cent.
Lemon brandy is a typically Dutch drink. Herbs and lemon peel are added to the distillate, and sometimes caramel for a darker colour and fuller flavour. It resembles lemon jenever, but is sweeter, and is around twenty per cent.
A fruit liqueur is a liqueur based on fruit. Every liqueur must have at least fifteen per cent alcohol and at least a hundred grams of sugar per litre. If a product stays below fifteen per cent, it is no longer called a liqueur but a likorette.
Pikeurtje falls outside all three: the maker calls it a fruit wine. On this shelf that is the exception, not the rule.
Fruit in the name does not make it a healthy product; it is still alcohol.
