Why here

Aberfeldy is more than that one twelve-year-old

Most shops stock the 12 Years Old and nothing else. Alongside it we have the 15, the 18, the 20 and a 25-year-old, plus four casks that Signatory, Gordon & MacPhail, Douglas Laing and The Whisky Cellar have bottled under their own names.

Of some of them we still have exactly one bottle. That is the kind of collection you only build by chasing it for years, and that is why people from all over the country order here. If you are not sure which bottle you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

  • 1896The Dewar brothers have the distillery built on the Pitilie Burn.
  • 1898The first spirit runs from the still.
  • 1917–1919Closed: during the First World War barley is needed as food.
  • 1972The distillery’s own maltings closes and the number of stills goes from two to four.
  • 1998John Dewar & Sons passes to Bacardi.

Aberfeldy is in Highland Perthshire, on the south bank of the Tay just outside the village of Aberfeldy. Tommy and John Alexander Dewar had the distillery built in 1896 by Charles Doig, the architect behind dozens of Scottish distilleries. In 1898 the first spirit ran from the still. It is the only distillery the Dewar family built themselves.

The reason was practical: Dewar’s sold so well as a blend that more of its own malt was needed. The largest part of what is distilled here has therefore gone into the blends for well over a century, with Aberfeldy forming the largest malt share in White Label. Only in recent decades has Aberfeldy been available as a single malt under its own name. Since 1998 John Dewar & Sons has belonged to Bacardi; the Dewar’s World of Whisky visitor centre is also on the site. The buildings have been on the Scottish list of monuments since 2002.

The water comes from the Pitilie Burn, a stream known for traces of alluvial gold in its bed. Hence the nickname you see on every label: the golden dram.

Why are there four bottlers alongside the distillery itself?

Because casks of Aberfeldy end up with independent bottlers, who release them under their own name: Signatory Vintage, Gordon & MacPhail, Douglas Laing and The Whisky Cellar are all four on our shelves. Mostly at cask strength, without chill filtration, and in runs of a few hundred bottles. We deliberately seek those out: the kind of bottle you will not find at a large chain.

Frequently asked questions about Aberfeldy

How many Aberfeldy does ’t Bockje have in stock?

At the moment 12 different bottles, of which 11 are immediately available; the 16 Years Old is temporarily sold out. Four of the twelve come from independent bottlers. That number varies: single casks are often gone quickly.

Which Aberfeldy is best to try first?

The 12 Years Old is the logical starting point: the house’s standard bottling at 40%. If you would like to taste first without buying a whole bottle, the same whisky is available in 20 cl. In doubt? Give us a call.

Why is Aberfeldy called the golden dram?

The water comes from the Pitilie Burn, a stream in which traces of alluvial gold have been found. That nickname is reflected in the gold on the labels. It says nothing about the taste; you only find that out when you pour it.

What is the difference between Aberfeldy and Dewar’s?

Dewar’s is a blend of dozens of malt and grain whiskies. Aberfeldy is the single malt from the distillery that the Dewar family had built for the purpose, and it supplies the largest malt share in Dewar’s White Label. The bottle of Aberfeldy contains only malt from that one distillery.

What are Signatory, Gordon & MacPhail, Douglas Laing and The Whisky Cellar?

Independent bottlers. They buy individual casks from distilleries and bottle them under their own name, usually at cask strength and in small runs. The Gordon & MacPhail Aberfeldy 2009 is, for example, a bottling of 267 bottles. They are not part of the distillery’s regular range.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Aberfeldy abroad?

Yes. We ship to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included or how many bottles fit in one shipment.
