Why here

Ninety-one casks that will soon be gone

Adelphi buys individual casks and bottles them under its own name: without colouring, without chill filtration and usually at cask strength. Each cask exists only once. Once it is gone, that bottle does not come back.

With ninety-one bottlings this is the largest range from a single bottler that we carry, from an entry-level bottle at forty euros to a forty-year-old Miltonduff. Of fifteen of them we have exactly one left. A selection of fifty is shown below; you will find the rest in the online shop. Not sure which one to get? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Own ranges

The bottles that Adelphi puts together itself

Besides single casks, Adelphi has its own series: by region, by batch, and a blend made with whisky writer Charles MacLean.

About the house

A distillery that disappeared and came back as a bottler

  • 1880A. Walker & Co takes over and expands with a Coffey still.
  • 1903Distillers Company Ltd buys the company; malt production stops shortly afterwards.
  • 1993Jamie Walker brings the name back, now as an independent bottler.
  • 2014Adelphi opens its own distillery on Ardnamurchan.

Adelphi began in 1826 as a distillery in the Gorbals in Glasgow, on the Clyde. The brothers Charles and David Gray built it; from 1880 it belonged to A. Walker & Co, who added a Coffey still for grain whisky. Around 1886 the company was among the largest producers in Scotland. In 1903 Distillers Company Ltd bought it up and shortly afterwards malt production stopped. What was still standing was demolished in 1971.

The name lay dormant for almost a century. In 1993 Jamie Walker, great-grandson of Archibald Walker, brought it back, not as a distillery but as a bottler, with the explicit choice to put quality above quantity. Whisky writer Charles MacLean chairs the tasting panel that selects the casks. In 2004 Walker sold the company to Keith Falconer and Donald Houston. And in 2014 the circle closed: Adelphi opened its own distillery on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.

Adelphi bottles from a single cask: no colouring, no chill filtering, and the bottles are counted per cask instead of per batch.

What does ‘independent bottler’ mean?

Distilleries sell on part of their casks. An independent bottler buys such a cask, lets it mature further and bottles it under its own name. That means you can come across a Mortlach or a Laphroaig in a version the distillery itself never released: different strength, different cask, different age. The label states the cask number and how many bottles came out of it.

The Glover series

Six editions of the series that Adelphi named after Thomas Blake Glover, the Scot who left for Japan in the nineteenth century.

Adelphi has long since stopped bottling only Scotch

A Scottish bottler putting a Japanese whisky on the bottle is a reversal of how things went for decades. Adelphi now buys casks in eight countries outside Scotland and bottles them under the same conditions: single cask, no colouring, no filtering.

For anyone who wants to explore the world beyond Scotland, that is handy: the same bottler, the same way of working, and so an honest comparison between a Swedish, a Japanese and a Scottish whisky.

Ten casks from outside Scotland

Japan, Sweden, Germany, England and the United States, plus two special blends.

Frequently asked questions about Adelphi

How much Adelphi does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Ninety-one bottlings. That is the largest selection from a single bottler in our shop. This page shows a selection of fifty; you will find the rest in the webshop.

What is an independent bottler?

A company that buys individual casks from distilleries and bottles them under its own name. Adelphi does this without colouring and without chill filtration, usually at cask strength. The label shows the cask number and the number of bottles.

Why is the same distillery and the same year sometimes listed twice?

Because they are two different casks. Of Dailuaine 2007 we have cask 304336 and cask 304331. Tasting them side by side shows how much the cask matters.

Which Adelphi should you try first?

The Private Stock Reserve or one of the three regional bottlings (Highland, Speyside, Islay) at 46 percent. If you want to know straight away what Adelphi is about, choose a single cask at cask strength.

Does Adelphi also bottle non-Scottish whisky?

Yes. We have casks from Japan, Sweden, Germany, England and the United States, plus a Jamaican and a Dutch one. Always bottled in the same way.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Adelphi abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
