The first production year of a reopened distillery
Annandale distilled whisky again in 2014 for the first time since 1918. In that year 85 casks of peated and 103 casks of unpeated spirit were filled. There will never be more. Of that first year we have two in stock, both bottled just over three years old at a good 61 percent.
In addition, two casks from 2015, both on an oloroso sherry butt from cooperage Miquel Martin. Annandale never combines casks: every bottle comes from one cask, with the cask number given. Not sure which one you should have? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.
Man O’Sword or Man O’Words?
Annandale does not put a brand name on the bottle but one of two names, depending on whether the barley has been dried over a peat fire.

From oat mill back to distillery

- The distillery in five moments
- 1836George Donald builds the distillery near Annan.
- 1893John Walker & Sons buys the company.
- 1918Production stops; the plant is dismantled.
- 1924–2007The site dries oatmeal and houses livestock.
- 2014On 3 November whisky flows again after 95 years.
Annandale lies near Annan in Dumfriesshire, a quarter of an hour from the English border, which makes it the first or last distillery in Scotland, depending on which way you drive. George Donald, an excise officer from Elgin, built it in 1836. In 1893 it came into the hands of John Walker & Sons, which presumably used the whisky mainly as a peated component in its blends.
In 1918 the distillery closed, and shortly afterwards the equipment was dismantled. From 1924 to 2007 the site was in the service of the Robinson family: the kiln and the corn house became a drying plant for the oatmeal brand Provost, and cattle stood in the bonded warehouse. The rest fell into disrepair.
David Thomson and Teresa Church bought the whole site in 2007 and put around ten million pounds into it. On 3 November 2014, spirit ran from the stills again, under the guidance of the late Dr. Jim Swan. The first own bottlings reached the market in June 2018.
Annandale does not vat casks together. Every bottle comes from a single cask, with the cask number on the label. Nothing to hide behind.

Frequently asked questions about Annandale
How much Annandale does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Four bottles, all available immediately and all from a single cask. Two come from the first production year 2014, two from 2015. That number varies: single casks are gone when they are gone.
What is the difference between Man O’Sword and Man O’Words?
Man O’Sword is the peated whisky, Man O’Words the unpeated one. Same distillery, same craftsmanship; the difference lies in whether the barley was dried over a peat fire. The names refer to Robert the Bruce and Robert Burns.
Why is a three-year-old whisky so expensive?
Because this is the first production year of a reopened distillery, from a limited number of casks, bottled individually at cask strength. You pay here for rarity and for a moment in history, not for age. If you simply want a good bottle to drink, there are better choices for that money. Call us and we will help you decide.
What do single cask and cask strength mean?
Single cask means that the bottle comes from one cask and has not been combined with other casks. Cask strength means that no water has been added; these bottles are around 61 percent. A splash of water in the glass makes them more approachable.
Is Annandale a Lowland whisky?
Yes. The distillery is in Dumfriesshire, right by the English border, in the Lowlands. The style differs from what you would classically expect of the Lowlands, because a distinctly peated variant is also made.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Annandale abroad?
Yes. We ship to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included or how many bottles fit in one shipment.
