Why here

A distillery you only get to know through others

Ardmore was built to disappear into a blend. Since 1898 almost the entire production has gone into Teacher’s Highland Cream, of which it is the most important malt component. Only in 2007 did a first single malt of its own appear, and the distillery's own range remained small after that.

That is why this is par excellence a brand for independent bottlers, and we are set up for that: twenty-two single casks, from an eight-year-old at 61 percent to a 1995 vintage and a 21-year-old from Samaroli. Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory, Adelphi, Claxton’s, Blackadder, Douglas Laing and Murray McDavid stand side by side here. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

From the distillery itself

The two own bottlings

Ardmore does not release more than that in the Netherlands. That is not a shortage on our side.

About the distillery

Peated in the Highlands, built next to the railway

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1898The Teacher family builds Ardmore for its own blend.
  • 1955 and 1974The number of stills is growing to eight.
  • 2001The coal fires under the stills go out.
  • 2007Only then will the first own single malt appear.
  • 2014The distillery ends up with Suntory.

Ardmore stands near the village of Kennethmont in Aberdeenshire, at about 180 metres altitude along the railway between Aberdeen and Inverness. That railway was the reason for the location: it brought in barley and coal and carried whisky away. The water comes from springs on Knockandy Hill.

The Teacher family built it in 1898 to secure malt for Teacher’s Highland Cream, the blend that had made the house big. Adam Teacher, the son who came up with the plan, died during construction. Since 2014 the distillery has belonged to Suntory, which also owns Laphroaig. In the Netherlands you can still buy that blend: Teacher’s is on our shelf.

What makes Ardmore unusual is the smoke. Most Highland distilleries gave up peat in the twentieth century; Ardmore did not. The barley is ground at 12 to 14 ppm, lightly to moderately peated, with peat from Aberdeenshire.

Until 2001 the stills were coal-fired. When that stopped, the team spent seven months making steam coils with kinks that mimicked the hot spots of the coal fire.

What is Ardlair?

The unpeated variant that Ardmore distils for part of the year, named after a stone circle nearby. You will almost only come across it with independent bottlers, under the name Ardlair instead of Ardmore. If you search on just one of the two names, you therefore miss the other half.

A few casks from independent bottlers

Eleven casks, from eight to twenty-one years, almost all at cask strength. Of two of them we still have exactly one bottle.

Six more casks, with a twist of their own

Rum casks, brandy casks and ex-Islay casks: bottlers like to push the boundaries at Ardmore.

Five more casks that are also there

Frequently asked questions about Ardmore

How many Ardmore does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty-five bottles: two from the distillery itself and twenty-three from independent bottlers. That last number varies a lot, because it is almost always a matter of a few casks.

Why does Ardmore release so little itself?

Because the distillery was built in 1898 to supply malt for the blend Teacher’s Highland Cream, and most of the production still goes there. The first single malt of its own only came in 2007.

Which Ardmore should you try first?

The Ardmore Legacy is the cheapest way in and at once the bottle the house itself sees as its calling card. If you want to know why enthusiasts look for Ardmore, take a single cask at cask strength. The smoke is in there undiluted.

Is Ardmore a smoky whisky?

Yes, light to medium: the barley is peated to 12 to 14 ppm, about a third of what a robust Islay whisky gets. It is smoke with honey around it, not the medicinal side of Islay.

What is Ardlair?

The unpeated variant from the same distillery, named after a stone circle nearby. Independent bottlers put that name on the label instead of Ardmore. Also search for it in the online shop if you want to see everything.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Ardmore abroad?

Yes. We ship to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included or how many bottles fit in one shipment.
