What we do and do not say about this
What is certain: this whisky matures and is bottled in the cellars of the cognac house in the Charente. It rests in ex-cognac casks of American oak and is then finished in old Pineau des Charentes casks. The minimum maturation is five years.
What is not established: where the distillate comes from. The house speaks of whisky that is made in the Charente, but nowhere says that it distills itself, and a French trade source writes that the distillate is in fact bought in elsewhere in France. Until that is cleared up, we do not call it its own distillate.

A Norwegian in Cognac
- The house in brief
- 1905Founded by Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen.
- CognacWhere the house is based, in the Charente.
- 1987The cognac house Dupuy joins.
- 2009The fourth generation takes over.
Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen came from Norway and founded a trading house in Cognac in 1905. It grew into one of the best-known cognac brands in Scandinavia; in Norway the house is the market leader. The company is still family-owned and has been run by the fourth generation since 2009.
Those Norwegian roots are literally part of the range. Alongside the regular five-year-old there is an expression finished in aquavit casks, the Scandinavian herbal spirit. That is the bottle that puts both halves of the house in one glass.
There is also a version in chestnut wood (fût de châtaignier) and a peated one. Chestnut is unusual in whisky: the wood is rich in tannins and spicy, and gives a different kind of wood tone than oak.
The same cellars, the same casks, but with grain.
What these bottles go with
For those who know cognac and want to know what cognac casks do to whisky. The kinship is clearly audible.
The aquavit and chestnut versions are the most interesting of the four; they are finishes you rarely come across.
