Why here

Truly a distillery of its own

With many young brands, it is a fair question whether they actually distil themselves. Here they do. Thibaut and Peter De Meyer had custom copper stills made, with the letters B, W and C on them, and they distil, mature and bottle everything in Assebroek near Bruges.

Malted barley from the local region is used, in small batches, with maturation in its own warehouse. The core range goes into the bottle at forty-six percent, in bottles of half a litre. The distillery can also be visited.

About the names

The city's history on the label

  • The company in brief
  • 2019Founded by Thibaut and Peter De Meyer.
  • AssebroekWhere the distillery is, in Bruges.
  • 2022The first commercial whisky.
  • 46%The strength of the core range.

The series are called Rogia, Ryggia and Peathia. Those names go back to old forms of the name of Brugge itself. Explanations differ on the precise meaning, so we leave that open.

Lanchals is a different story. Pieter Lanchals was a Burgundian-Habsburg official who was beheaded in Brugge on 22 March 1488, during the conflict between Maximilian of Austria and the city. That bottling appeared in August 2024, in a regular and a cask strength version.

Besides whisky, stout is brewed and coffee is roasted at the same address. The cask selection fits that approach: besides bourbon and oloroso, maple syrup, moscatel, pinot noir and cognac also turn up. What is in your bottle differs per batch; check the label for that.

Belgian whisky as a city story, not as a Scottish imitation.

Practical

What these bottles go with

For those who want to know what is happening in their own region. Brugge is closer than Speyside and the level has risen considerably in recent years.

The half-litre bottles make it less costly to try something new.

Frequently asked questions about Bruges Whisky Company

How many Bruges Whisky Company does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Four bottles.

Where is the distillery?

In Assebroek, a district of Brugge. Distilling, ageing and bottling all take place on site.

Is this their own distillate?

Yes. Thibaut and Peter De Meyer had their own copper stills made and have been distilling themselves since 2019.

What is Lanchals?

A bottling from August 2024, named after Pieter Lanchals, the official who was beheaded in Bruges on 22 March 1488.

Why half-litre bottles?

That is the size of the core range. With small batches this is usual, and it lowers the threshold for trying something.
