For anyone who finds bourbon too sweet
Most bourbon leans on corn and is therefore sweet and round. Bulleit deliberately does it differently: much more rye goes in, and rye gives pepper, spice and dryness instead of sweetness. If you usually find bourbon too sweet, you often get on well with this one.
We have the three bottles that complete the story: the regular bourbon, the same bourbon after ten years in the cask, and the rye in which the rye grain goes all the way up to ninety-five percent. If you are not sure which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Bulleit is not a centuries-old house but a brand from 1987. Tom Bulleit, until then a lawyer, started it on the basis of a family story: his great-great-grandfather Augustus Bulleit supposedly made a whiskey in Louisville around 1830 with far more rye than usual. There is no historical evidence for that recipe, and the whisky world says so openly. The idea behind it is real enough.
For the first few years the whiskey was distilled elsewhere, under contract at existing Kentucky distilleries. Since 2017 the brand has had its own distillery in Shelbyville, built by owner Diageo. The rye traditionally comes from Indiana, from the former Seagram plant.
Where most bourbon leans on corn, Bulleit leans on rye. That is the whole idea, and you can taste it.
Bourbon or rye: what is the difference?
Bourbon must be made from at least fifty-one percent corn; rye whiskey from at least fifty-one percent rye. Bulleit Bourbon is about 68 percent corn with 28 percent rye, well above what most bourbons use. Bulleit Rye goes all the way: 95 percent rye. Corn gives sweetness, rye gives pepper and spice.
Frequently asked questions about Bulleit
How many Bulleit does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Three bottles, all immediately available: the bourbon, the ten-year-old bourbon and the rye.
What is the difference between Bulleit Bourbon and Bulleit Rye?
The grain ratio. The bourbon is made of roughly 68 percent corn and 28 percent rye; the rye is made of 95 percent rye. Corn gives sweetness, rye gives pepper and spice. The rye is therefore clearly drier and sharper.
Which Bulleit should you try first?
The regular bourbon. It is versatile: neat, with ice or in a cocktail. If you mostly make Old Fashioneds or Manhattans, the rye is often the better choice.
Where is Bulleit made?
In Kentucky. For the first decades it was distilled under contract at other distilleries; since 2017 the brand has had its own distillery in Shelbyville. The rye comes from Indiana.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Bulleit abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
