Why here

Four grains from the same distillery

Woodford Reserve’s bourbon is in almost every wine & spirits shop. The rye, the malt and the wheat whiskey are not, and those three are what make the series interesting: four bottles from the same distillery, with only the grain as the difference.

We have all four, plus the Double Oaked, a litre bottle from 2022, and three bottles from the Master’s Collection, the series that appears every year in a small run and then does not return. If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range: four times the same house, four times a different grain

The distillery is in Woodford County in Kentucky, about thirteen kilometres from Versailles. Elijah Pepper began distilling there in 1812; his son Oscar took over and had the building erected in 1838 that still stands today. In those same years James C. Crow worked there as master distiller and laid down a number of methods that have shaped bourbon production ever since.

In 1878, Leopold Labrot and James Graham bought the site; their name stayed attached to it for more than a century. Brown-Forman bought it in 1941, stopped production in the late 1960s and bought it back in 1993 to restore it. Three years later the Woodford Reserve brand appeared. The main building has since been designated a National Historic Landmark.

Technically the house is an outsider: the whiskey is a combination of distillate from copper pot stills on the site itself and column distillate from the Brown-Forman plant in Shively. Pot stills are unusual in the bourbon world; almost everyone works exclusively with columns.

Frequently asked questions about Woodford Reserve

How much Woodford Reserve does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Nine different bottles: the four grain types from the core range, the Double Oaked, a Holiday one-liter bottle and three bottles from the Master’s Collection. All nine are available at the moment.

What is the difference between the bourbon, the rye, the malt and the wheat?

The main grain. For bourbon that is corn, for rye it is rye, for malt it is malted barley and for wheat it is wheat. Everything around it (the distillery, the cask, the approach) stays the same, so the difference lies in the grain.

What is Double Oaked?

Whiskey that goes into a second cask after the usual maturation: a heavily toasted, lightly charred new oak cask. That second round is shorter than the first and puts the emphasis on the wood.

What is the Master’s Collection?

A series that Woodford Reserve releases at intervals in small runs, each instalment with its own experiment: a different cask finish, a different grain or a different way of casking. Each number appears once.

Why does Woodford Reserve use pot stills?

Because the site is equipped for it. The whiskey is a combination of distillate from copper pot stills at the distillery itself and column distillate from the Brown-Forman plant in Shively. In Kentucky that combination is unusual.
