Why here

Four Adelphi casks from thirteen to twenty years

From bottler Adelphi we have four different Glen Elgins: thirteen, fifteen, sixteen and twenty years. Same distillery, same bottler, rising age. That is the purest way to taste what time in the cask does.

The distillery itself only releases the twelve-year-old. Everything else comes from bottlers: eleven single casks from a house you will hardly ever see in a shop. Not sure which one to choose? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Five bottles under ninety euro

With the distillery's own twelve-year-old as the constant.

About the distillery

The last of the boom years, and a prediction that came true

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1898Built to a design by Charles Doig near the hamlet of Fogwatt.
  • 1900Production begins, but stops after a few months.
  • 1901Sold at auction for a fraction of the construction cost.
  • 1930Part of White Horse Distillers.
  • 1964From two to six stills.

Glen Elgin lies near the hamlet of Fogwatt, a kilometre or a kilometre and a half south of Elgin. Architect Charles Doig, the same man behind the pagoda roof at Dailuaine, designed it in 1898, at the end of the great whisky boom. He also predicted that this would be the last new distillery in Speyside for the time being. And so it was: only sixty years later came Tormore.

The beginning was difficult. Production started in 1900 and was already at a standstill after a few months; a year later the distillery was sold at auction for a fraction of what it had cost. Only from 1930, under White Horse Distillers, did things calm down. Since then Glen Elgin has been the most important malt in that blend, and it still is.

What makes the whisky heavier than the average Speyside are two old-fashioned choices: a fermentation of about eighty hours in wooden washbacks, and cooling in worm tubs instead of modern condensers. That same mechanism gives Craigellachie and Mortlach their weight.

Until 1950 the distillery had no electricity. Work was done by the light of paraffin lamps.

Why is there only one bottle of our own?

Because Glen Elgin is first and foremost a blending malt. The vast majority of production goes into White Horse and other blends; as a single malt only the twelve-year-old appears, once part of the Flora & Fauna series. Now and then a Special Release is added, such as the eighteen-year-old from 1998 on this page. Everything else has to come from independent bottlers.

Frequently asked questions about Glen Elgin

How many Glen Elgin does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirteen bottles, all available immediately: two from the distillery itself and eleven from independent bottlers.

Why does Glen Elgin release so little itself?

Because it is mainly a blending malt. Most of the production goes into White Horse. As a single malt there is only the twelve-year-old, with the occasional Special Release.

What makes Glen Elgin different from other Speysides?

Two old-fashioned choices: a long fermentation of about eighty hours in wooden washbacks, and cooling in worm tubs. That gives a fuller, oilier character than most Speyside whiskies.

Which Glen Elgin is best to try first?

The twelve-year-old from the distillery itself. If you want to look further, the four Adelphi casks are interesting: same bottler, ranging from thirteen to twenty years.

What does -Glenlivet after the name mean?

An old Speyside custom whereby distilleries put that name after their own because it sold well. Cadenhead’s keeps that spelling. There is no Glenlivet in the bottle.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glen Elgin abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
