Why here

Wood from Hokkaido and from its own mountains

Mizunara is the most sought-after type of oak in the whisky world: soft, porous and difficult to cooper, but with an aroma you get nowhere else. Glendalough was the first Irish distillery to use it. We have two: a seven-year-old and a seventeen-year-old.

The mirror image of that is the pot still whiskey on casks of Irish oak from the Wicklow mountains themselves. Every label shows the cask number and the number of the tree that was felled for it. If you are not sure which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Five friends and a saint with a blackbird

  • The distillery in four moments
  • 2011Five friends founded Glendalough.
  • 2012The first poitin appears, the old Irish forerunner of whiskey.
  • 2013The distillery opens in Newtownmountkennedy in Wicklow.
  • nowAs well as whiskey, seasonal gin with picked herbs.

Glendalough means ‘valley of the two lakes’ and lies in the Wicklow mountains, an hour south of Dublin. County Wicklow is called the garden of the country in Ireland. Five friends started the company in 2011, in the first wave of Irish craft distilleries.

The man on every label is Saint Kevin, a sixth-century hermit who founded a monastery in this valley. According to the legend he stood praying so long with outstretched hand that a blackbird nested in it. He remained standing until the young had flown.

What sets the house apart is the attention to wood. Mizunara from Hokkaido, Irish oak from its own mountains, madeira, calvados, burgundy: at Glendalough it is always about the cask. As with many young Irish distilleries, part of the older whiskey comes from elsewhere, matured and blended under its own name.

Irish oak is rare and difficult to work. The label therefore states which tree was felled for that cask.

What is mizunara?

Japanese oak from Hokkaido, the most sought-after wood in the whisky world. It is soft and porous, so casks leak easily, and the wood has to dry for years before it can be used. What it delivers is an aroma no other oak gives: sandalwood, coconut and incense. Glendalough was the first Irish distillery to work with it.
