A bourbon that has crossed the ocean
The Ocean series matures on board ships. Because of the rolling, the sea air and the changing temperatures, something very different comes out of the cask than from a warehouse in Kentucky.
We have Voyage No. 24 in stock, alongside the regular Straight Bourbon. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.
The bottles
Two bottles from Kentucky.
Maturing at sea
- Jefferson’s in four facts
- 1997Trey Zoeller starts together with his father Chet, a bourbon historian.
- No stillsZoeller deliberately did not build a distillery of its own.
- 2012the first Ocean casks go on board.
- Pernod Ricardthe owner since 2019.
Jefferson’s was set up in 1997 by Trey Zoeller and his father Chet, who is a bourbon historian. The name refers to President Thomas Jefferson, as a tribute to his urge to experiment.
Important to know: Jefferson’s is first and foremost a blender. Zoeller never built a distillery of his own and buys bourbon from Kentucky distilleries; which ones is not disclosed. Since 2012, distilling, blending and bottling have also taken place at Kentucky Artisan Distillery in Crestwood.
The house’s best-known idea is the Ocean series. Casks go on board ships and sail around the world for months. The swell, the sea air and the changing temperatures create much more contact between whiskey and wood than in a stationary warehouse. Each voyage gets its own number; ours is Voyage No. 24.
Months at sea instead of lying still in a warehouse: you can taste it.
