Four bottles, and an honest story to go with them
The Kurayoshi is a pure malt from Tottori: soft, round and accessible. We have two vintages without an age statement plus the twelve- and the eighteen-year-old.
It is good to know how this whisky is put together. More on that below. If you do not know which one to get, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Four bottles from Matsui Shuzo.
What is and is not known about it
- The Kurayoshi in four facts
- 1910Matsui Shuzo has been making shochu in Tottori since that year.
- 2015the company receives a whisky distilling licence.
- 2017only in that year does distillation begin in Kurayoshi itself.
- Daisenthe water comes from this mountain.
Matsui Shuzo is based in Kurayoshi in Tottori Prefecture and has made shochu since 1910. The whisky licence came in 2015; according to the company itself, its own distillation only began in 2017. The water comes from Mount Daisen.
That matters for the bottles with an age statement. A whisky of twelve or eighteen years old cannot have been distilled at Kurayoshi, because distilling there only began in 2017. Where that whisky does come from, the house does not disclose; the American importer describes the range as sourced blends. We have no firmer answer than that.
Since 2021, the Japanese industry association has applied a standard stating that saccharification, fermentation, distillation and at least three years of maturation must take place in Japan for something to be called Japanese whisky. That standard is voluntary and applies only to members. We would rather say what we know and what we do not know than suggest something.
A fine, soft malt, but not every bottle was distilled in Kurayoshi.
Frequently asked questions about The Kurayoshi
How many The Kurayoshi does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Four different bottles: two vintages without age statement, a twelve-year-old and an eighteen-year-old. All four are currently available.
Is The Kurayoshi really Japanese whisky?
The whisky is matured and bottled in Japan by Matsui Shuzo in Tottori. But in Kurayoshi, distilling has only been done on site since 2017, so the bottles of twelve or eighteen years cannot have been distilled there. Where that whisky comes from, the house does not disclose.
What is a pure malt?
The Japanese term for what is called a blended malt in Scotland: a composition of malt whisky from more than one distillery, without grain whisky.
What is the Japanese standard of 2021?
An agreement of the Japanese industry association: only whisky whose saccharification, fermentation and distillation take place in Japan and which matures in Japan for at least three years may be called Japanese whisky. The agreement is voluntary and binds only members.
