Why here

Swedish whisky with a signature of its own

Mackmyra does two things you won't find anywhere else: Swedish oak as cask wood, and malt smoked with juniper twigs instead of peat alone. That gives a flavour that doesn't resemble Scotland.

We have eight, including a tasting set with four 5 cl miniatures and an independent bottling of eight years. If you are not sure which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

Four bottles that each centre on a different cask.

About the distillery

Eight friends and a mountain hut

  • Mackmyra in five facts
  • 1998the idea is born in a mountain hut in Salen.
  • 1999eight friends found Mackmyra.
  • 2011the seven-storey Gravity distillery starts operating.
  • 50metres deep is the cask warehouse in the old Bodas mine.
  • 30litres: the small casks the house works with.

The idea arose in 1998 in a mountain hut in Salen, where eight student friends from the technical university met. A year later they founded Mackmyra, named after the village near Valbo, southwest of Gavle.

In 2011 the Gravity distillery came into use: a seven-storey building in which gravity does the transport. The raw materials go to the top and drop from floor to floor. That saves about forty-five percent energy compared with the first installation. Distilling is done in two copper stills from Forsyths of Rothes.

Two things make the flavour. Besides bourbon and sherry casks, the house also uses Swedish oak, and it smokes its own malt with peat from a bog near Osterfarnebo together with juniper twigs. Part of the casks mature fifty metres underground in the decommissioned Bodas mine near Hofors.

Juniper smoke instead of only peat: that is where the Swedish character begins.

Eight different bottles, including two half bottles and a sample pack of four small bottles. All eight are currently available.

Where does Mackmyra come from?

From Sweden. The name comes from the village of Mackmyra near Valbo, southwest of Gavle. Eight friends founded the company in 1999.

What is the Gravity distillery?

A seven-storey building that has been running since 2011 and where gravity does the transport: the raw materials go up and sink down by themselves. That saves about forty-five percent of energy.
