Bourbon or sherry, everything else the same
Omar is the best-known range from the Taiwanese distillery Nantou. The core consists of two bottles that differ only in the cask: one matured in bourbon casks, the other in sherry casks. Both without an age statement and both at forty-six percent.
That makes them particularly suited to tasting side by side. If you do not know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.
The two bottles
The same whisky, two casks.
Whisky from central Taiwan
- Nantou in four facts
- 1978the factory in Nantou is built.
- 2008whisky is distilled for the first time.
- 4copper stills, made by Forsyths in Scotland.
- 5%evaporates from the cask each year, approximately.
Omar comes from Nantou, in the middle of Taiwan. The distillery belongs to Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation, a state-owned company. The factory dates from 1978, but whisky has only been distilled there since 2008.
There are four copper stills of two to seven thousand litres, made by Forsyths in Rothes, Scotland. Under the brand name Yushan the same house bottles a second range; we stock that too.
The climate is subtropical and that speeds up maturation considerably: about five percent per year evaporates from the cask, well over twice as much as in Scotland. Whisky without an age statement therefore means something different here than in Speyside.
No age on the label, but with a warehouse that works twice as hard.
Frequently asked questions about Omar
How many Omar does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Two bottles: the bourbon cask version and the sherry cask version, both at 46 percent. Both are available at the moment.
Where does Omar come from?
From the Nantou distillery in Taiwan, owned by the state company Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation. The factory has existed since 1978; whisky has been distilled there since 2008.
What is the connection with Yushan?
Yushan is the second brand name of the same distillery in Nantou. We carry that one too.
What is the difference between the two bottles?
Only the cask. One matured in bourbon casks, the other in sherry casks. Both are bottled at 46 percent and carry no age statement.
Why is there no age statement?
Because the whisky matures faster in the subtropical climate. About five percent evaporates from the cask per year; a number on the label would mean something different here than in Scotland.
