Why here

Four vintages you rarely see together

From the Vintage series we have 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2009 in stock. That is the same distillery four times, with four different vintages and cask programmes, from 46.5 to 48.9 percent. You rarely come across a row like that together.

In addition, the complete age range from twelve to twenty-five years, both Luminary editions and a twenty-one-year-old from bottler Signatory. That is unusual, because Dalmore rarely ends up with independent bottlers. If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

A stag from 1263 and a sea mine from 1920

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1839Alexander Matheson founds Dalmore near Alness.
  • 1867The Mackenzie brothers take over and bring the stag emblem with them.
  • 1870One of the first malts exported to Australia.
  • 1920A sea mine explodes; a large part of the distillery burns down.
  • 1960Whyte & Mackay buys the distillery from the family.

The Dalmore lies near Alness on the Cromarty Firth, some thirty kilometres north of Inverness. The name is Gaelic for ‘big meadow’. Alexander Matheson, a merchant who had made his fortune in Asia, had the distillery built in 1839 on a former farm.

In 1867 the Mackenzie brothers took it over, and with them came the coat of arms that now appears on every bottle: a stag with twelve points. It goes back to 1263, when clan chief Colin of Kintail is said to have saved King Alexander III from an attacking stag. For this the king gave him land, a motto and the right to bear that stag.

In 1917 the British Navy began making sea mines in the sea loch next to the distillery. In 1920 it went wrong: an explosion and the fire that followed destroyed a large part of the site. The lawsuit that Andrew Mackenzie brought afterwards lasted five years and went all the way to the House of Lords.

The stills are unusual: the wash stills have a flat top instead of a swan neck, and the spirit stills all differ in shape and size.

Why is Dalmore so rich in sherry?

Because for decades the house has sourced casks from a single sherry bodega in Jerez, with an emphasis on oloroso. For many bottles the whisky first matures for years on American oak and then spends a further period on those sherry casks. The King Alexander III goes furthest: it is finished on six different cask types at once.

Frequently asked questions about The Dalmore

How much Dalmore does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fifteen bottles, all available for immediate delivery. The Cigar Malt, the Port Wood Reserve and an Adelphi bottling are temporarily sold out.

What does the deer on the bottle mean?

It is the coat of arms of Clan Mackenzie: a twelve-point stag. According to tradition, clan chief Colin of Kintail saved King Alexander III from a charging stag in 1263, and was given, among other things, the right to bear that animal as a result. When the Mackenzies took over Dalmore in 1867, the coat of arms came with it.

Which Dalmore should you try first?

The 12 Years Old. If you want to know right away what sherry does, buy the regular twelve-year-old and the Sherry Cask Select side by side: same age, different cask programme.

What is the Vintage series?

Bottlings with a harvest year instead of an age on the label. Each year has its own cask programme and its own strength. We have four: 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2009.

Why do you rarely see Dalmore from independent bottlers?

Because few casks come onto the market; the house keeps most of its stock for itself. The Signatory on this page is therefore an exception.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Dalmore abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
