Why here

More than just the standard bottle

With Penderyn you usually see one or two bottles. We have eight: the Celt, the sherry and port finishes, the peated one, the Faraday named after the distillery's own still, and three releases from the Icon of Wales series: numbers 12, 13 and 14.

Welsh whisky is a small category with its own way of distilling. If you are not sure which one to get, give us a quick call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

Five bottles, from light to peated.

About the distillery

A still found nowhere else

  • Penderyn in five facts
  • around 1900the last Welsh whisky house, Frongoch, disappears.
  • 2000the company is founded; on 14 September the first distillation takes place.
  • 1-3-2004the first bottle is presented on St David’s Day.
  • 11.5 hoursthe duration of a single distillation in the Faraday still.
  • 2021 and 2023second and third location: Llandudno and Swansea.

In Wales, after the Frongoch distillery disappeared around 1900, no whisky was distilled for well over a century. Penderyn, founded in 2000 and located in the village of Penderyn in the Brecon Beacons, broke that silence: on 1 March 2004, St David’s Day, the first bottle was presented by the then Prince of Wales.

The house does not distil in the usual way. The Faraday still, designed by Dr David Faraday, combines a pot still with a column. The spirit is drawn off at the seventh plate and leaves the plant at ninety-two percent; one run takes about eleven and a half hours. In 2013 a second unit was added.

There are now three sites: Penderyn itself, since 2021 a distillery in Llandudno and since 2023 the Copperworks in Swansea. The Icon of Wales series is numbered and each time is about a piece of Welsh history; we have numbers 12, 13 and 14.

One run through the Faraday still takes eleven and a half hours and yields spirit at 92 percent.

Icon of Wales

Numbered editions that each refer to a piece of Welsh history. All three at 46 percent.
