Why here

Six wine casks from one distillery

Tamnavulin is one of the few Speyside houses that builds its whole entry-level range around wine casks. Three red wine editions, a white, a tempranillo and a sherry: all the same whisky, all at 40 percent, only the cask differs. For a little over thirty euros per bottle, that is an inexpensive way to learn to taste what wood does.

In addition a twenty-five-year-old anniversary bottling, a sixteen-year-old cask from Gordon & MacPhail and a six-year-old Claxton’s. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Twelve years silent, then a new course

  • Tamnavulin in four moments
  • 1966The distillery is being built.
  • 1995In May production stops.
  • 2007Distilling has resumed.
  • 2014The owner of Whyte & Mackay passes into the hands of Alliance Global.

Tamnavulin was built in 1966, at a time when many new distilleries were being added in Scotland. Production stopped in May 1995 and stayed that way until 2007. Twelve years of not distilling leaves a gap in the stock: that is the reason why little old Tamnavulin exists.

The distillery belongs to Whyte & Mackay, which has been owned by Alliance Global of the Philippines since 2014. When the brand was relaunched as a single malt, the house chose wine casks as its signature, and that has remained so.

That is favourable for anyone who wants to learn to taste. Six bottles of the same whisky at 40 percent, with only a different cask finish, together cost less than one old single malt. Put them side by side and the difference is impossible to miss.

Twelve years of standstill explains why old Tamnavulin is rare.

Frequently asked questions about Tamnavulin

How much Tamnavulin does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Ten different bottles, six of which have a wine cask finish. All ten are currently available.

What is the difference between the wine editions?

Only the cask. The base and the bottling strength of 40 percent have been kept the same, so what you taste between the three red editions, the white and the tempranillo comes from the wood.

How old is Tamnavulin?

The distillery was built in 1966. From May 1995 to 2007 production was halted; those twelve years explain why so little old Tamnavulin exists.

Who owns Tamnavulin?

From Whyte & Mackay, which has been owned by Alliance Global of the Philippines since 2014.

What is the Diamond Anniversary Release?

A twenty-five-year-old bottling, released around the distillery’s anniversary, at 51.8 percent.
