Why here

Twelve cask finishes from one distillery

Tomintoul is one of the few distilleries that builds its entire range around cask finishes. Cognac, merlot, pinot noir, tawny port, Pedro Ximénez, Caribbean rum, sauternes: all the same base, each a different cask. For anyone who wants to learn to taste what wood does, that is a shelf worth lingering at.

In addition, the permanent range from 36.99 euros, a 1977 vintage of thirty-six years, the Five Decades, and five bottlings from Cooper’s Choice, Claxton’s, Signatory, Gordon & MacPhail and Infrequent Flyers. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

  • Tomintoul in four facts
  • 1964Founded by Glasgow merchants Hey & Macleod and W. and S. Strong.
  • 4stills: two wash stills and two spirit stills.
  • 3.3 millionlitres of pure alcohol per year of capacity.
  • 1977the oldest vintage on our shelf, thirty-six years old.

Tomintoul is near Kirkmichael, between Ballindalloch and the village of Tomintoul, in the heart of Speyside. The distillery is young by Scottish standards: it was built in 1964 by two Glasgow whisky trading houses, Hey & Macleod and W. and S. Strong. Today Angus Dundee Distillers of London is the owner.

There are four stills, together good for 3.3 million litres of pure alcohol a year. For decades the house has presented itself as the soft dram (the gentle dram), and that is no empty slogan but the reason why the range works so well with cask finishes: a soft distillate lets the wood be heard better.

The exception is the Peaty Tang, for which peated and unpeated malt are combined. We have it in two versions: without age statement and fifteen years old.

A soft distillate lets the wood be heard better. The whole range is built on that.

Twelve cask finishes

The same whisky, twelve times a different cask. Put two side by side and the difference is in the wood.

Frequently asked questions about Tomintoul

How much Tomintoul does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty-seven different bottles, of which twelve with their own cask finish and five from independent bottlers. All twenty-seven are available at the moment.

Where is Tomintoul?

At Kirkmichael in the Speyside, between Ballindalloch and the village of Tomintoul. The distillery was built in 1964 and now belongs to Angus Dundee Distillers.

Why is Tomintoul called the gentle dram?

Because the house has presented itself that way for decades: the gentle dram. The spirit is light in character, which lets the cask finishes shine.

What is Peaty Tang?

A bottling in which peated and unpeated malt come together. We have two: with no age statement and a fifteen-year-old.

What is the difference from the bottlings by Signatory or Claxton’s?

Those are independent bottlers: they buy a cask from the distillery and bottle it under their own name, usually at cask strength and cask by cask. That is why you come across ages that the distillery itself does not release.

Can I reserve a bottle and collect it in Bathmen?

That is possible. Order online and choose pickup, or call us on 0570 541 278 and we will set it aside. Pickup at Brink 2 is free.
