Why here

English whisky that doesn't lean on age

The Lakes is a young distillery and is not secretive about it. There is no age on the bottle; the emphasis is on cask work, especially sherry. The Whiskymaker’s Reserve and the Whiskymaker’s Editions are numbered or named compositions that differ each time.

We have seven of them, plus the complete The One series: the standard blend and three cask finishes on sherry, port and colheita. If you are not sure where to start, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The One series

Four bottles at 46.6 percent: the blend as a starting point and three cask finishes alongside it.

About the distillery

A farm from 1850 on an English lake

  • The Lakes in three facts
  • 2014The distillery opens at Bassenthwaite Lake.
  • 1850the year of construction of the farm in which it is housed.
  • 2022Whiskymaker’s Reserve No. 4 is named best single malt in the world at the World Whisky Awards.

The Lakes Distillery is in the English Lake District, close to Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria, and opened in 2014. It is housed in a renovated farm from the 1850s; building it cost nine million pounds. One of the founders was previously involved with the Lochranza distillery on Arran.

The house deliberately opts for compositions rather than ages. The Whiskymaker’s Reserve is released numbered, the Whiskymaker’s Editions are given a name: Volar, Iris, Kairos, Equinox, Resfeber. Each release is its own selection of casks, usually with sherry as its backbone.

That this approach is taken seriously became clear in 2022: the Whiskymaker’s Reserve No. 4 was named best single malt in the world at the World Whisky Awards. For a distillery just eight years old, that is remarkable.

No age on the bottle, but a name and a choice of cask. For The Lakes that is the whole idea.

Frequently asked questions about The Lakes

How many bottles of The Lakes does ’t Bockje have?

Eleven different ones: the four parts of The One range and seven bottlings from the Whiskymaker’s range. All eleven are currently available.

Where does The Lakes come from?

From Cumbria in England, close to Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District. The distillery opened in 2014 in a renovated nineteenth-century farm.

Why is there no age statement on the bottle?

Because the house deliberately steers by composition and cask work rather than by years. Each release is its own selection of casks, usually with sherry as the base.

What is the difference between The One and the Whiskymaker’s range?

The One is a blend, with three cask finishes alongside it. The Whiskymaker’s Reserve and Editions are single malt and appear numbered or with a name, each in its own composition.

Is English whisky worth the trouble?

Judge for yourself, but The Lakes' Whiskymaker’s Reserve No. 4 was named best single malt in the world at the World Whisky Awards in 2022. For a distillery that is eight years old, that is remarkable.
