Where most Speyside houses take bourbon casks as their base and use sherry for finishing, Tamdhu does the opposite: the current bottlings mature entirely in sherry casks. That makes the range recognisable and explains why even the twelve-year-old is already fairly dark in the glass.
We have eleven: the core range from twelve to twenty-one years, two Distinction bottlings, a Cask Strength, the Cigar Malt II and two casks from Infrequent Flyers and Claxton’s. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Own maltings, no pagoda roof

- Tamdhu in five moments
- 1896The distillery is built in Knockando.
- 1897The first whisky goes into a cask.
- 1927–1947Twenty years of standstill.
- 2010The distillery closes again.
- 2013Ian Macleod Distillers restarts production in May.
Tamdhu stands in the village of Knockando in Moray, in the middle of Speyside, and was built in 1896; a year later the first whisky went into cask. The distillery has lain idle for long periods: from 1927 to 1947, and again in 2010. In June 2011 Ian Macleod Distillers bought the lot and in May 2013 distilling resumed.
What sets Tamdhu apart is the maltings. It is one of the last distilleries to malt its own barley on site, with a mechanical Saladin box instead of a malting floor. As a result it also lacks the pagoda roof you do see at its neighbours: there is no traditional kiln.
The current range matures entirely in sherry casks. That is an expensive choice (sherry casks cost many times what bourbon casks do), but it gives the whisky a consistent signature, from the twelve-year-old to the twenty-one-year-old.
No pagoda roof, because there is no traditional kiln: Tamdhu malted with a Saladin box.

Frequently asked questions about Tamdhu
How many Tamdhu does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Eleven different bottles, from twelve to twenty-one years, plus two casks from independent bottlers. All eleven are available at the moment.
Does Tamdhu really mature only on sherry casks?
The current range does. That is a deliberate and expensive choice, because sherry casks cost many times as much as bourbon casks. It does give the whisky a consistent signature across the whole range.
Where is Tamdhu?
In Knockando in Moray, in the heart of Speyside. The distillery was built in 1896; the first whisky went into cask in 1897.
Why does Tamdhu have no pagoda roof?
Because there is no traditional kiln. Tamdhu malted its own barley with a mechanical Saladin box and therefore does not need that characteristic chimney.
What happened in 2010?
Then the distillery closed. In June 2011 Ian Macleod Distillers bought it and in May 2013 production resumed.
