What is and is not claimed
The Daisen comes from Matsui Shuzo in Kurayoshi, in the Japanese prefecture of Tottori. It is blended whisky, and Matsui itself does not call the series Japanese Whisky. We follow suit and therefore do not add it either.
Since 2021 there have been voluntary agreements in Japan about when a bottle may be called Japanese Whisky. Those agreements are not legal and do not apply outside Japan. That a producer does not use the term itself is therefore telling. What remains is what you can judge: the cask and what happens in the glass.
The bottles we have in stock
Mizunara, red wine and sakura: the difference lies in the cask finish.
The mountain of Tottori
- The range in brief
- Matsui ShuzoThe house behind the series.
- KurayoshiIn Tottori Prefecture.
- 1 September 2023The introduction.
- 40%The strength of all three.
Daisen is the highest mountain in the Chugoku region, in the same Tottori prefecture the range comes from. The mountain forms the centrepiece of a national park.
Matsui Shuzo is in Kurayoshi. Among whisky drinkers the house is known mainly for its other ranges; The Daisen was added to them on 1 September 2023.
Mizunara is Japanese oak, a type of wood that is hard to work and is therefore little used. Sakura is cherry wood. Both are unusual for whisky casks; the third edition uses red wine wood.
Three casks, forty percent, and no big words besides.
What these bottles go with
Three bottles side by side show what mizunara, sakura and red wine wood do.
All three are at forty percent, so you are really comparing the cask and not the strength.

Three bottles.
Who makes The Daisen?
Matsui Shuzo in Kurayoshi, in the Japanese prefecture of Tottori.

Matsui does not use that designation itself for this range, so neither do we. It is blended whisky from a Japanese house in Tottori. We say no more than that about it.
What does the name Daisen stand for?
For Mount Daisen, the highest in the Chugoku region, in the same prefecture.
What is the difference between the three bottles?
The cask finishes: mizunara, or Japanese oak, sakura, or cherry wood, and red wine. All three are at forty percent.
