Why we explain this brand
This house has a past you should know about. Matsui Shuzo has brewed sake in Kurayoshi since 1910, only received a whisky licence in 2015 and began distilling in 2017. What came onto the market in the years before under other brand names of this house could therefore not contain its own Japanese distillate.
The line called The Matsui was in fact distilled in Kurayoshi. What makes it interesting is the wood: mizunara oak and cherry wood from sakura trees, woods you rarely find in a bottle in Europe.
The bottles we have in stock
Three versions, each with its own type of wood or peat level.
Mizunara and sakura
- The company in brief
- 1910Founded as a sake brewery in Kurayoshi.
- 2015The whisky licence.
- 2017Their own distilling begins.
- 2018The line The Matsui is released internationally.
Mizunara is Japanese oak. The wood is porous and labour-intensive, which makes casks leaky and expensive, but it gives a distinctive note of sandalwood and incense that you will not find anywhere else.
Cherry wood from sakura trees is even rarer as cask wood. It gives a blossom-like, slightly sweet tone. Both versions are bottled at forty-eight percent, as is the peated one, which matures in ex-bourbon casks.
The water comes from the Daisen, the volcano in the region, and is filtered by the volcanic soil. Since 1 April 2021, industry agreements in Japan have governed what may be called Japanese whisky: malting, fermenting, distilling and at least three years of maturation must take place in Japan. They are agreements, not law.
The wood makes the difference here, not the age.
What these bottles go with
Anyone who has never tasted mizunara should do so once: it is a wood note you will not find in Scotch whisky.
These bottles carry no age statement. Judge them by what is in the glass, not by a year.
