Why here

Read first what is in the bottle

Togouchi is not a distillery but a brand and maturation-site name. The blends (Premium and the aged bottles) are composed of malt whisky from Scotland and grain whisky from Canada, matured and bottled in Japan. The company has always been open about this, and since the Japanese labelling rules of 2021, World Blended Whisky is on the label too.

In addition, since July 2021 there has been a Togouchi Single Malt from its own distillate, distilled in Hatsukaichi. So the name on the bottle does not automatically tell you what you are holding: check whether it says single malt or blended. In the shop we are happy to tell you which of the two you have in front of you.

About the tunnel

A train that never ran

  • The company in brief
  • 1918Founded in Hatsukaichi as a sake and shochu company.
  • Around 1970The tunnel dug for a railway line that never came.
  • 2017Built its own distillery in Hatsukaichi.
  • 2021The first Togouchi single malt from its own distillate.

The casks lie in an abandoned railway tunnel near Togouchi, in the municipality of Akiota in the mountains of Hiroshima. The tunnel was dug around 1970 for a railway line that never came. The climate inside is stable all year round, around fourteen to fifteen degrees and about eighty percent humidity. The figures for the length of the tunnel vary, so we do not give a number.

The parent company was founded in 1918 in Hatsukaichi, on the Seto Inland Sea opposite Miyajima, as a sake and shochu producer. In 2017 its own distillery was added, with pot stills and a hybrid still that is also used for gin.

Since July 2021 the company has released two single malts of its own making. The difference lies in where they mature: one in the warehouse by the sea, the Togouchi in the mountain tunnel.

Look at the label: blended or single malt makes the difference here.

Practical

What these bottles go with

The blends are soft and approachable and work well with a cube of ice or in a highball, as is customary in Japan.

The single malt is a different story and deserves a small glass with nothing added.

Frequently asked questions about Togouchi

How much Togouchi does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Five bottles.

Is Togouchi Japanese whisky?

Partly. The blends are composed of malt whisky from Scotland and grain whisky from Canada, matured and bottled in Japan; since 2021 these have been called World Blended Whisky. The single malt since July 2021 is in fact its own Japanese distillate.

How can I tell what I'm holding?

By the label. If it says single malt, it is the house’s own distillate. If it says blended or World Blended Whisky, it is the composed variant.

Where does Togouchi mature?

In an abandoned railway tunnel near Togouchi in the municipality of Akiota, dug around 1970 for a railway line that never came.

Why is that tunnel suitable?

The climate there is stable all year round: around fourteen to fifteen degrees and roughly eighty percent humidity.
