What exactly is French whisky?
French whisky is whisky that is distilled and matured in France, under the same European rules that apply to every whisky in the European Union. There is no separate French definition.
The term whisky is a legally protected product category in the European Union. If whisky is on the label, the bottle must meet the requirements of Annex I, category 2 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787, wherever the distillery is located.
The country of origin therefore says nothing about a lower or higher bar. It says where the grain was fermented, where the still stood and where the casks lay.
What requirements does the European regulation set for whisky?
Regulation (EU) 2019/787 requires that whisky comes from cereals, saccharified by the diastase of the malt and fermented with yeast, and that every distillation takes place below 94.8 percent by volume.
After that the distillate matures at least three years in wooden casks of at most 700 litres. At bottling the alcohol content must be at least 40 percent by volume. Adding alcohol is not allowed, diluted or undiluted. Sweetening is not allowed, not even to round off the taste, and flavouring is not allowed either. Plain caramel (E 150a) is the only permitted agent, solely for colour.
The designation single malt may only be used under the regulation if the whisky has been distilled exclusively from malted barley, at a single distillery.
Which French whiskies have a protected geographical indication?
Two French designations for whisky are protected: Whisky de Bretagne, also Whisky breton, and Whisky d’Alsace, also Whisky alsacien. The Fédération Française des Spiritueux names both as the two whisky geographical indications of France.
Whisky de Bretagne or Whisky breton is listed in the EU register eAmbrosia under number PGI-FR-01981. The product specification prescribes whole malted grains, optionally supplemented with other whole grains, maturation of at least three years in oak casks of at most 700 litres and a minimum of 40 volume percent at sale. The storage areas are not climate-controlled, so that the oceanic climate of Brittany does its work.
Whisky d’Alsace or Whisky alsacien was approved by arrêté of 30 December 2014 and published in the BO AGRI of 22 January 2015. The product specification allows only malted barley, water and yeast, requires discontinuous distillation in copper stills of no more than 25 hectolitres, at least three years of maturation in oak of no more than 700 litres and an alcohol content between 40 and 65 percent ABV. Colourings, caramel and flavouring are prohibited there, and an age statement is only permitted from six years.
How big is France in the whisky world?
France was the second-largest export market for Scotch whisky in 2025, both by volume and by value: 152 million bottles of 70 centilitres and 404 million pounds in export value.
The Scotch Whisky Association put the total export of Scotch in 2025 at 5.3 billion pounds and 1.34 billion bottles of 70 centilitres. Only India took more by volume than France, with 220 million bottles. By value, only the United States ranked ahead of France, with 933 million pounds.
Those figures concern Scotch whisky going to France, not whisky made in France. They do show how deeply whisky is rooted in French drinking culture, which explains why French distillers found a home market.
How does the French method differ from the Scottish one?
A lot of French whisky comes from companies that were already distilling or brewing something else, and regularly matures in casks that previously held French wine or eau-de-vie. Whisky Magazine describes that origin house by house.
The trade journal names Warenghem in Lannion, which also makes beer alongside whisky, and Yves Lehmann in Obernai, who gets his wash from a nearby brewery. Le Domaine des Hautes-Glaces in the Alps malts and brews its own. In Alsace, F. Meyer, Bertrand in Uberach and Gilbert Holl in Ribeauvillé come from the world of fruit eau-de-vie.
The difference is just as visible in the cask. Whisky Magazine points to casks from cooperages in the Cognac region, to cognac casks at Grallet-Dupic in Lorraine and to white wine casks from Bordeaux, Sauternes and Coteaux du Layon at Lehmann. The product specification of Whisky de Bretagne permits not only barley but also wheat, buckwheat, triticale, rye, spelt, maize and oats, a range of grains that is unusual in Scotland.
