Bottles that put their flavour on the label
Wemyss does something almost nobody else does: instead of putting the cask number first, each bottling gets a name that describes what the tasting panel arrived at. Carpaccia Salsa Verde. Kiwi and Chilli. Blooming Gorse. Flaming Feast. The distillery takes a back seat.
We have eleven: the three regular blended malts, the peated Kiln Embers, four of those named casks and the blended Lord Elcho. The Caol Ila from 1981 is the oldest. If you are not sure which one suits you, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

A family that bottles and also distils
- Wemyss in four moments
- 2005William Wemyss starts Wemyss Malts in Edinburgh.
- 2013The family buys the plan for the Kingsbarns distillery in Fife.
- 2015Kingsbarns makes its first distillate in February.
- 1981The vintage of the oldest Wemyss on our shelf, a Caol Ila.
Wemyss Malts was founded in 2005 by William Wemyss and is based in Edinburgh. The house buys casks from Scottish distilleries and bottles them under its own name, with the permanent blended malts Spice King, Peat Chimney and The Hive as its backbone.
What makes the house recognisable is its naming. With a single cask, the cask number is not the focus but a description of the flavour: the tasting panel decides the name. For a buyer that is handier than it sounds, because you roughly know what you are holding before you have read the back.
The family has meanwhile started distilling itself. William Wemyss bought the plan for Kingsbarns in Fife in early 2013; that distillery has been making distillate since February 2015. In addition, Darnley’s gin comes from the same stable. Wemyss is therefore no longer a bottler that only buys in.
Not the cask number on the label, but what the tasting panel arrived at.

Frequently asked questions about Wemyss Malts
How many Wemyss does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Eleven different bottles: the three standard blended malts, the Kiln Embers, four named casks, The King, a second Peat Chimney and the blended Lord Elcho. All eleven are available at the moment.
Why do Wemyss bottles have such strange names?
Because the tasting panel decides the name. Instead of a cask number, each bottling gets a description of what was tasted, such as Carpaccia Salsa Verde or Kiwi and Chilli. The distillery is less prominent.
What is the difference between The Hive, Spice King and Peat Chimney?
These are the three regular blended malts of the house, each built around a single character: The Hive is the sweet one, Spice King the spicy one and Peat Chimney the peated one.
Is Wemyss a distillery or a bottler?
Both by now. Wemyss Malts started in 2005 as a bottler and still buys in casks, but in 2013 the family also bought the plan for the Kingsbarns distillery in Fife, which has been distilling itself since 2015.
What is Lord Elcho?
The blended Scotch from Wemyss Malts. A blend contains grain whisky as well as malt whisky, whereas the blended malts in the standard range consist solely of malt whisky.
