Why here

Thirteen casks, thirteen distilleries, not a single duplicate

With an independent bottler, everything revolves around the cask, not the brand. The Whisky Cellar bottles cask by cask, in natural colour and usually at cask strength. So every bottle has its own strength, its own age and its own run, and at some point it is simply sold out.

We have thirteen on the shelf and not a single distillery appears twice: from Aberfeldy and Blair Athol to a thirty-three-year-old Cambus and a Jura from 1990. Also names you can't buy from the distillery itself, such as Ruadh Maor. If you don't know which cask suits you, give us a quick call. That's what we're here for.

Where to start with The Whisky Cellar

Four young casks at cask strength, in which you can taste the distillery still fairly unmasked.

About the bottler

A bottler that selects purely on taste

  • The vintages on our shelves
  • 1990Jura, thirty years old when the cask was bottled.
  • 2010Ruadh Maor, eleven years old and peated.
  • 2011Aultmore, nine years at cask strength.
  • 2020The Private Cellars Selection gets under way.

The Whisky Cellar is based in Edinburgh and was set up by Keith Bonnington, who worked in the whisky trade for years before he started bottling under his own name. The house does not buy whole lots but single casks, and releases a few at a time.

The selection principle is strikingly short: age, region and cask type do not matter. If the tasting panel likes the cask well enough, it goes into the bottle. That is why a seven-year-old Blair Athol sits in the same range as a thirty-three-year-old grain whisky. No colouring is added.

In September 2020 the Private Cellars Selection joined them: a range of single casks that appears numbered per series. Two of them are here, a thirty-one-year-old Invergordon and a twenty-nine-year-old Glen Keith.

No requirements for age, region or type of cask. If the tasting panel finds the cask good enough, it goes into the bottle.

The older and the unusual casks

Nine casks from eleven to thirty-three years, including two grain whiskies and a name that only turns up at bottlers.

Frequently asked questions about The Whisky Cellar

How many bottles from The Whisky Cellar does ’t Bockje have?

Thirteen, and no distillery appears twice. All thirteen are available right now. The current stock is shown in the online shop.

What exactly is The Whisky Cellar?

An independent bottler from Edinburgh, set up by Keith Bonnington. The house does not distil itself but buys individual casks from Scottish distilleries and bottles them under its own name.

What is the Private Cellars Selection?

A series of single casks from The Whisky Cellar that has been appearing in numbered series since September 2020. We have two of them: an Invergordon of thirty-one years and a Glen Keith of twenty-nine.

What does cask strength mean?

That the whisky has not been reduced with water to a fixed bottling strength but goes as it comes out of the cask. As a result the alcohol percentage varies per bottle, in this series from 42.5 to 57.1 percent.

What is Ruadh Maor?

A name you only come across with independent bottlers, and which stands for peated distillate. The bottle on our shelf is eleven years old, vintage 2010.

Can I reserve a bottle and collect it in Bathmen?

That is possible. Order online and choose pickup, or call us on 0570 541 278 and we will set it aside. Pickup at Brink 2 is free.
