What stands out about this house: almost every bottle is a combination of two grapes instead of one. Chardonnay with viognier for white, shiraz with cabernet or with pinotage for red.
That is not a cost-cutting measure but a choice: two grapes make up for each other’s weak spot. If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Why two grapes often work better than one
- The combinations here
- Chardonnay + viognierBody from one, aroma from the other.
- Shiraz + cabernetRipe fruit versus structure.
- Shiraz + pinotageTypically South African, with a smoky edge.
- ElsewhereBordeaux and the Rhône are no different.
A single-grape wine sounds purer, but in practice many of the world’s most famous wines are in fact blends. Bordeaux mixes cabernet and merlot, the southern Rhône grenache with syrah and mourvèdre, and champagne combines three grapes.
The reason is simple: every grape has a weak spot. Chardonnay gives body but can smell a little flat; viognier, on the other hand, brings aroma. Shiraz delivers ripe fruit but little structure; cabernet makes up for that.
The combination of shiraz with pinotage is typically South African, and you will find it almost nowhere else. After all, pinotage is that country’s own grape.
A blend is not a compromise. Most of the world's great wines are one.
Reserve and Grande Reserve
Three wines with more concentration.
Frequently asked questions about Country Lane
How many Country Lane does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Five wines, from 8.29 to 16.99 euros.
Why are these all blends?
Because grapes complement each other. Chardonnay gives body but can smell flat, viognier brings aroma; shiraz gives ripe fruit, cabernet structure. Most famous wines in the world are blends.
What is shiraz-pinotage?
A typically South African combination. Pinotage is that country’s own grape, and together with shiraz it gives a full wine with a slightly smoky edge.
What is the difference between Reserve and Grande Reserve?
More concentration and selection the higher you go. The Grande Reserve is the house’s top wine.
Which Country Lane should you choose?
The shiraz-cabernet at 8.29 for weekdays. If you want to taste the South African character, the Reserve shiraz-pinotage is the better choice.
Does ’t Bockje also ship these wines abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
