From the boot to the Alps
Italy makes wine in every region, and you can tell from the variety: fresh white wines from the north, full-bodied reds from the south, and local grapes everywhere that grow nowhere else.
The biggest houses are Farina, Sartori, Epicuro, Pellegrino, Bottega and a number of others. Below is the full overview. If you do not know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

DOC, DOCG and IGT on an Italian label
- The designations
- IGTLoose rules; there are plenty of idiosyncratic wines among them.
- DOCProtected origin with fixed rules.
- DOCGThe same, but stricter and with an inspection.
- RiservaMatured longer than the regular version.
Italy has three levels on the label. DOCG is the strictest: smaller areas, lower yields and a mandatory tasting test before the wine may go into the bottle. DOC sits below it, with fixed but broader rules.
IGT looks like the lowest rung, but that is misleading. Precisely because the rules are looser, producers who want to do something unconventional choose it. The famous Tuscan wines with Cabernet and Merlot once fell under it too, simply because those grapes were not in the local regulations.
In practice: DOCG gives certainty, IGT gives room. Neither says anything about the taste.
IGT sounds like the lowest rung, but some of the most famous Italian wines fall under it.

Frequently asked questions about Italian wine
How many Italian wines does ’t Bockje have?
Well over a hundred and thirty, from seventy different houses.
What do DOC, DOCG and IGT mean?
DOCG is the strictest designation, with a compulsory inspection. DOC sits below it with looser rules. IGT has the loosest rules, and that is exactly where many individualistic wines are found.
Is IGT worse than DOCG?
No. Some of the most famous Italian wines fall under IGT, simply because the grapes used were not in the local regulations.
Wat betekent riserva?
That the wine has matured longer than the regular version from the same origin.
Which Italian grapes are worth knowing?
Nebbiolo for Barolo and Barbaresco, corvina for Valpolicella and Amarone, primitivo and negroamaro in the south, and nero d’Avola in Sicily.
Verstuurt ’t Bockje wijn naar het buitenland?
Yes, to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you would like to know whether your country is included.
