Italië kent drie niveaus. DOCG is het strengst, met kleinere gebieden, lagere opbrengsten en een verplichte keuring. DOC zit daaronder met vaste maar ruimere regels.

IGT lijkt de laagste trede, maar dat is misleidend: juist omdat de regels ruimer zijn, kiezen makers die iets eigenzinnigs willen doen daarvoor. Sommige van de beroemdste Italiaanse wijnen vallen eronder, simpelweg omdat de gebruikte druiven niet in het lokale voorschrift stonden.
