Argentine wine with a long history
Most Argentine wine houses you see on the shelf date from the last thirty years. Norton has existed since 1895, founded by an Englishman who worked on the railway through the Andes and brought French vines to Mendoza.
Four wines between ten and thirteen euros, with the malbec as the obvious lead. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

How malbec moved from France to Argentina
- The journey of the grape
- FranceMalbec was one of the grapes of Bordeaux and Cahors.
- 1853French vines are brought to Mendoza.
- 1956A severe frost night in France destroys a lot of malbec.
- NowArgentina has by far the most malbec in the world.
Malbec originally comes from France, where it was one of the permitted grapes of Bordeaux and played the leading role in Cahors. It reached Argentina in the mid-nineteenth century, when French vine cuttings were brought to Mendoza.
In France the grape then fell out of favour: it is sensitive to frost and disease, and after a severe night of frost in 1956 much of the planting was not replaced. In Mendoza it thrives (dry climate, plenty of sun, cool nights at altitude), and there it has grown into the country's flagship.
The result differs noticeably. French malbec from Cahors is dark and austere; the Argentine version is rounder, riper and more approachable.
A French grape that almost disappeared in France and became famous on the other side of the world.
