Why here

The whole series, not just the well-known bottle

Most shops have the green bottle with the blade of grass in it and nothing else. We also have the Biała, the Czarna, the Złota and the Rosé, two vanilla versions at different strengths, mango-passion fruit, raspberry, and the two bottles from the Fresh range with sour lemon and sour apple.

The classic bison grass vodka comes in 70 centilitres and in one litre. If you are not sure which of the twelve you are looking for, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The well-known bottle

Bison Grass in two sizes

The vodka the brand is known for, with a blade of dried bison grass in every bottle.

About the brand

A blade of grass from the Białowieża forest

  • The brand in brief
  • sixteenth centuryFlavoured vodka with bison grass had already been described in Poland by then.
  • 1928Polmos Białystok starts production of this brand.
  • BiałowieżaThe primeval forest on the border of Poland and Belarus where the grass grows.
  • 2022The brand ends up in the hands of the Polish Maspex group.

Żubrówka is a flavoured rye vodka that has been made since 1928 at Polmos Białystok in the north-east of Poland. The name comes from żubr, the Polish word for wisent or European bison. That animal lives in the Białowieża Forest, the primeval forest on the border with Belarus, and that is where the grass comes from too.

That grass is Hierochloe odorata, known in Dutch as veenreukgras and in the trade as bison grass. It is harvested and dried by hand, and one blade goes into every bottle. The grass contains coumarin, an aromatic compound with notes of vanilla and freshly cut hay; that is what sets this vodka apart from ordinary grain vodka. In the United States coumarin may not be used as an additive in foodstuffs, and for that the producer makes a separate version.

In Poland the series is named after colours. Biała is white, czarna is black, złota is gold. Since 2022 the brand has been owned by the Polish Maspex group; before that it was successively in the hands of CEDC and Roust.

In Poland, Żubrówka is often diluted with about two parts apple juice. That is called szarlotka, after the apple pie.

Which bottle

Where do you begin?

If you do not know the brand yet, the regular Zubrowka Vodka Bison Grass is the bottle you are looking for. That is the vodka with the blade of grass in it and the character Żubrówka is known for. There is a 70 centilitre bottle and a one-litre bottle; there is no other difference.

If you are looking for a clear vodka without the grassy note, the Biała is where you end up. The flavoured variants are lower than or equal in alcohol and have an added flavour; you choose those based on what you are looking for in them.

Frequently asked questions about Żubrówka

How many Żubrówka does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twelve bottles, all immediately available: the bison grass vodka in 70 centilitres and in one litre, plus Biała, Czarna, Złota and Rosé, and six flavour variants.

What is bison grass?

Bison grass is the trade name of Hierochloe odorata, in Dutch veenreukgras. It grows, among other places, in the Białowieża Forest on the border of Poland and Belarus. The grass contains coumarin, an aroma compound with notes of vanilla and freshly cut hay. Each bottle contains one dried blade.

Where is Żubrówka made?

At Polmos Białystok in north-eastern Poland, where the brand has been produced since 1928. Since 2022 it has been owned by the Polish Maspex group.

Is it spelled Zubrowka or Żubrówka?

In Polish it is Żubrówka, with a dot above the Z and an accent on the o. On the labels and in our online shop it appears without those marks, as Zubrowka. It is the same brand.

What do Biała, Czarna and Złota mean?

Those are the Polish words for white, black and gold. They stand for different versions within the same series.

How is Żubrówka drunk in Poland?

Often diluted with about two parts apple juice. That combination is called szarlotka, the Polish word for apple pie.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Żubrówka abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
