Why here

Low-alcohol, and we say so straight away

Most people looking for alcohol-free beer mean 0.0 percent. That is not the case with these two beers from Brouwerij ’t IJ: the labels of the Free IPA and the Vrijwit state 0.5 percent. In the Netherlands that is called low-alcohol. We put that at the top here, so you are not surprised in the shop.

Why we stock them anyway: they are two beers that do not behave like a light version. The Free IPA is the low-alcohol version of the IJ IPA and is brewed with Amarillo hops; the Vrijwit is the counterpart of IJwit, with lemon and coriander seed. If you are looking for a 0.0, our alcohol-free shelf has plenty to choose from; if you are looking for beer from ’t IJ, here you will find the two there are.

Not sure which of the two you need? Give us a call. We will tell you how they look on our shelf and what the difference is.

About the brewery

A bathhouse next to the mill in Amsterdam-Oost

  • The brewery in brief
  • FunenkadeThe brewery is housed in a former bathhouse, right next to the De Gooyer windmill.
  • 2020The year the Free IPA was launched.
  • 2021The spring in which Vrijwit was added.
  • 0,5%What is on the label of both.

Brouwerij ’t IJ is in Amsterdam-Oost, in the former bathhouse on the Funenkade, right next to De Gooyer windmill. A second brewing site on the Zeeburgerpad was added later. Sources differ on the year of founding, so we do not state it here.

The Free IPA was added in 2020: a low-alcohol version of the IJ IPA, brewed with Amarillo hops. In spring 2021 came the Vrijwit, the low-alcohol counterpart of IJwit, brewed with lemon and coriander seed.

Both are at 0.5 percent. If you are specifically looking for 0.0 percent, this is not the brewery for you; take a look further on our alcohol-free shelf, where there are 0.0 beers.

The label says 0.5 percent. That is low-alcohol, which is something different from 0.0.

What does 0.0 mean, and where is the limit?

In the Netherlands, the Commodities Act (Warenwet) determines what may appear on the label. The designation alcohol-free may be used up to and including 0.1 percent alcohol. Low-alcohol runs from more than 0.1 percent up to and including 1.2 percent. A beer of 0.2 or 0.3 percent therefore falls into that second group, even if the packaging talks mainly about “non alcoholic”.

The Alcohol Act draws its own line: a drink with more than 0.5 percent alcohol at twenty degrees counts as an alcoholic drink. These two limits are not in the same place, which is why the labels are so confusing.

0.0 is not a legal designation in itself. It is a number that brewers put on the label. For these two beers from ’t IJ that means: 0.5 percent, so low-alcohol and not 0.0. If you want 0.0 percent, choose a beer that really says 0.0.

Frequently asked questions about alcohol-free beer from ’t IJ

Which alcohol-free beers from Brouwerij ’t IJ does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Two: the Free IPA in a 33 centilitre can and the Vrijwit in a 33 centilitre bottle. Both available immediately in Bathmen.

Is the Free IPA from ’t IJ really alcohol-free?

No. The label says 0.5 percent. In the Netherlands beer may be called alcohol-free up to and including 0.1 percent; from more than 0.1 up to and including 1.2 percent it is called low-alcohol. The Free IPA is therefore low-alcohol.

What is the difference between 0.0 and 0.5 percent?

0.0 is not a legal designation but a number that the brewer puts on the label, and it stands for beer with practically no alcohol left in it. 0.5 percent is a measured value that lies above the legal limit of 0.1 percent for alcohol-free, and is therefore called low-alcohol.

What is Vrijwit?

The low-alcohol counterpart of IJwit: a witbier brewed with lemon and coriander seed, 33 centilitres and 0.5 percent. The beer appeared in spring 2021.

Where is Brouwerij ’t IJ brewed?

In Amsterdam-Oost, in the former bathhouse on the Funenkade next to windmill De Gooyer. There is also a second brewing location on the Zeeburgerpad.
