The alcohol-free weizen from Erding
This page is only about Erdinger's alcohol-free range. We have one bottle of it: the Erdinger Alkoholfrei in the half-litre bottle, 0.0 percent according to the label.
Erdinger is a weissbier brewery and nothing else. All the house’s beers are wheat beers, apart from the lagers of the subsidiary site. The alcohol-free version is the logical extension of that.
If you are looking for something else without alcohol, there are 110 alcohol-free drinks on the shelf in Bathmen, from beer and wine to gin and aperitifs.

One site, one beer style
- The brand in four facts
- 1886The wheat beer brewery in Erding is mentioned for the first time.
- 1949On 27 December the brewery gets the name Erdinger Weißbräu.
- 1990The first wheat beer brewery to pass a million hectolitres.
- 1.5 million hlAnnual production in 2020, from a single site.
Erdinger Weißbräu is based in Erding, north-east of Munich. The brewery was first mentioned in 1886 and then changed hands a few times. In 1935 the then manager Franz Brombach bought the company; on 27 December 1949 it was given the name it still bears today.
In 1965 annual production was around 40,000 hectolitres. In 1977 that was about 225,000 hectolitres and Erdinger was the market leader. When the premises in the old city centre became too small, a new brewery rose on the edge of Erding in 1983. In 1990 Erdinger became the first weissbier brewery to pass the limit of one million hectolitres.
On the basis of those figures, the brewery calls itself the largest weissbier brewery in the world: around one and a half million hectolitres in 2020, from a single site. Erdinger does not grant licences; all the beer comes from Erding and goes from there to more than a hundred countries. The weissbiers are made with bottle fermentation.
Weissbier is top-fermented and brewed with a large proportion of wheat malt. The aromas that characterise such a beer arise during fermentation: isoamyl acetate is responsible for the light banana note, ferulic acid for the phenolic note reminiscent of clove. A regular Bavarian weizen comes in at about five to six percent alcohol.
There are two main routes to alcohol-free beer. The brewer can limit fermentation or stop it early, with a special yeast or at a lower temperature, so that hardly any alcohol forms. Or he first brews a full beer and then removes the alcohol, by heating or vacuum distillation; aromas evaporate along with it, and these are returned in the process.
Besides the regular alcohol-free one, Erdinger also makes a lemon variant and a grapefruit one. Those are not on our shelf.
Alcohol-free, 0.0 and low-alcohol
The label of this bottle says 0.0 per cent. In the Netherlands a beer may be called alcohol-free if it contains less than 0.1 per cent alcohol. If it contains between 0.1 and 1.2 per cent, it is called low-alcohol. A beer of 0.3 per cent is therefore not alcohol-free in the Netherlands but low-alcohol.
So 0.0 on the label means: below that limit of 0.1 per cent. It is a labelling term, not an arithmetical zero.
In other countries the limits are different. Belgium uses 0.5 per cent, Spain 1 per cent, France and Italy 1.2 per cent. As a result, the same beer may be called alcohol-free in one country and not in another.
