Botanicals from the painter’s paint pot
What sets Ginarte apart is the choice of botanicals. Besides wild juniper from the Tuscan Apennines, it contains plants that for centuries were used not as flavouring but as dyes: safflower for yellow, weld for yellow-green, madder for red and woad for blue. They were used for dyeing and painting in the Renaissance.
The list also includes more common names, among them nepitella, the wild mint that goes with mushrooms in Tuscan cooking.

What is the Frida Kahlo edition?
A licensed edition from the series the brand calls Life of an Icon: the same gin, in a bottle with its own label and packaging. We have found no source that says the recipe differs from the regular Ginarte.

The juniper is treated separately: it steeps in wheat alcohol and then goes into the still under vacuum, at low temperature, so that the finest aromas are preserved.
The dye plants (catmint, safflower, weld, madder and woad) are each macerated and distilled separately. Angelica, lavender, hibiscus, elderflower and pine buds are done together.
The brand is based in Greve in Chianti, north of Florence. The label names Distillerie Francoli as producer; the brand itself does not openly confirm that, so we stick to what is on the bottle.
Plants that Renaissance painters made their pigment from, now in a kettle.
What this bottle goes with
At 43.5 percent and with a long list of botanicals, this is a gin that holds its own well in a gin and tonic. Choose a neutral tonic so that the pine bud and wild mint are not drowned out.
It is also a bottle to give as a gift: the packaging is clearly intended as a present.
