Why here

From beer to spirits

Gospel starts where most gin stops: with beer. The malt wine on which these bottles are built is distilled from Jopen beer from Haarlem. That gives a base closer to jenever than to a neutral London Dry.

We have two of them: the gin and the Piet Honingh Genever. The latter is not gin but genever: the same family, but with more malt wine and less emphasis on the juniper berry.

Gin or genever?

Genever is the Dutch original: a distillate in which malt wine sets the tone and juniper takes part. Gin is the English further development, in which the base was made neutral and juniper took the lead. With Gospel the two lie close together, because both rest on the same malt wine.

About the distillery

Gospel Spirits was set up in 2015 by Michel Ordeman and now belongs to Jopen Distilling Co., the distilling arm of the Haarlem brewery Jopen. Distilling takes place in copper stills of 250 litres.

The recipe contains seven botanicals: eucalyptus, caraway seed, juniper, orange, angelica root, elderflower and coriander seed. Eucalyptus and caraway are the two that stand out.

The cask-aged version of Piet Honingh Genever was named the best genever in the world at the World Gin Awards of 2019 and 2020. Who Piet Honingh was, we have not been able to find out; the brand does not tell that story publicly.

The malt wine is distilled from beer, not from plain grain.

Which bottle

Gin or genever?

If you are looking for a gin for a gin and tonic, choose the Gospel Gin. The eucalyptus and elderflower come through most clearly in it.

Piet Honingh Genever is for those who drink jenever: neat, chilled, in a tulip glass. Or in a cocktail that would normally use an old jenever.

Both are in the shop at Brink 2 in Bathmen. Call 0570 541 278 if you would like to discuss.

Jopen Distilling Co., the distilling arm of the Haarlem brewery Jopen. The brand was set up in 2015 by Michel Ordeman.

What is different about the base?

The malt wine is distilled from Jopen beer instead of from ordinary grain alcohol.

Which botanicals does it contain?

Seven: eucalyptus, caraway seed, juniper, orange, angelica, elderflower and coriander seed.

Who was Piet Honingh?

We have not been able to find that out; the brand does not tell that story publicly.
