Why here

The most complex gin there is

Most gins work with eight to twelve botanicals. Monkey 47 uses forty-seven, a third of which come from the Black Forest itself: spruce tips, lingonberries, elderflower, sloe and blackberry leaf.

Besides the classic bottle we have the Barrel Cut, which has been post-matured on wood, and the 2025 annual edition in which fleur de sel joins as the forty-eighth botanical. If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the brand

A little monkey, a boarding house and a recipe in a wooden chest

  • The brand in four moments
  • after 1945Montgomery Collins helps with the rebuilding of the Berlin zoo and sponsors a little monkey, Max.
  • 1951He leaves the RAF and opens a guesthouse in the Black Forest: Zum Wilden Affen.
  • laterDuring a renovation a chest with his notes and recipe is found.
  • 2010Alexander Stein and distiller Christoph Keller release the gin.

The story behind Monkey 47 sounds too good to be true, and the makers also honestly say that not everything can be verified. The core: Montgomery Collins, a British air force officer, helped rebuild the Berlin zoo after the war and sponsored a little monkey there called Max. In 1951 he left the RAF, settled in the Black Forest and started a guesthouse that he called Zum Wilden Affen, after Max.

There he experimented with the herbs of the region and made his own gin. When his old guesthouse was renovated decades later, a chest turned up containing notes, photos and a sketch of the recipe. Alexander Stein, a former Nokia manager, became so captivated by it that he remade the gin together with distiller Christoph Keller.

What is in it now is exceptionally elaborate: many herbs go into the still fresh instead of dried, the peels are peeled by hand, and the lingonberries are macerated separately for thirty days. After distilling, the gin rests another hundred days in earthenware vessels before it goes into the bottle.

Forty-seven herbs, forty-seven percent. Both numbers come from the same story.

What is the Distiller’s Cut?

An annual release in which one extra herb is added to the fixed forty-seven. In the 2025 release that is fleur de sel, the fine sea salt that is skimmed by hand from the water surface. Salt in gin sounds odd, but it amplifies the other flavours, just as a pinch of salt does in the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions about Monkey 47

How many Monkey 47 does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles: the classic Schwarzwald Dry Gin, the Barrel Cut and the 2025 Distiller’s Cut with fleur de sel.

Why is it called Monkey 47?

Named after Max the little monkey from the Berlin zoo, who was sponsored by creator Montgomery Collins and gave his name to his guesthouse Zum Wilden Affen. The 47 stands for the number of herbs and for the strength of 47 percent.

Which botanicals does it contain?

Forty-seven, of which about a third come from the Black Forest: spruce shoots, cowberries, elderflower, blackthorn and bramble leaf, alongside classics such as juniper, coriander and cardamom.

Why is this gin so expensive?

Because of the way it is made: many botanicals go into the still fresh, the peels are removed by hand, the lingonberries are macerated separately for thirty days, and the gin then rests for another hundred days in earthenware vessels.

What is the best way to drink Monkey 47?

Neat or in a simple cocktail: a martini or a gin and tonic with a neutral tonic. With a pronounced tonic, the complexity is lost.

What is the Distiller’s Cut?

An annual release with one extra herb on top of the permanent forty-seven. In 2025 that is fleur de sel.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Monkey 47 abroad?
