Why here

Six experiments alongside the regular bottle

Most shops have the standard bottle and perhaps one variant. We have six from the series in which the house plays with other botanicals: Lunar, Neptunia, Flora Adora, Grand Cabaret, Sunspell and Another Gin. Each of them nudges the familiar cucumber-and-rose flavour in a different direction.

Then there is the Orbium, with quinine and blue lotus flower, and the Amazonia, of which we have exactly one left. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The permanent bottle

Hendrick’s in four sizes

The same gin, different quantity: up to a bottle of 1.75 litres.

About the brand

Two stills from an auction, and cucumber in the glass

Hendrick’s is made at Girvan on the west coast of Scotland by William Grant & Sons, the same family company behind Glenfiddich and Balvenie. The brand appeared in 1999 and is widely regarded as the bottle that started the gin boom: until then gin was mostly dry and piney, and this was something quite different.

The story begins earlier. In the 1960s Charles Gordon bought two unusual stills at auction: a Bennett pot from 1860 and a Carter Head from 1948, of which only a handful still exist worldwide. Decades later, those two became the heart of the recipe.

Both stills are used at the same time and the distillates are then combined. The Bennett boils the botanicals along with the spirit and produces something heavy and oily; in the Carter Head the botanicals hang in a basket at the top and only touch the vapour, which turns out light and floral. Master distiller Lesley Gracie herself describes that difference as a bath versus a sauna.

Cucumber and rose go in only after distilling. Those aromas are too delicate to survive the distillation.

Why does Hendrick’s taste so different?

Because of that post-treatment. The eleven botanicals are distilled together as usual, but the essences of cucumber and Bulgarian damask rose are added afterwards. That keeps them fresh and recognisable, whereas they would largely disappear during distillation. It is also the reason Hendrick’s may not formally be called a London Dry: nothing may be added after distilling.

Six from the experimental series

Always the same base, always a different direction: floral, spicy, salty or fruity.

Frequently asked questions about Hendrick’s

How many Hendrick’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twelve bottles, all available immediately: the standard gin in four sizes, six from the experiments series, the Orbium and the Amazonia.

Why does Hendrick’s taste of cucumber and rose?

Because they are added as an essence after distilling. Such delicate aromas do not survive distillation, so they are added afterwards.

Is Hendrick’s a London Dry gin?

No. With London Dry, nothing may be added after distilling, and that is exactly what happens here with the cucumber and rose essence.

What is the difference between the two stills?

The Bennett from 1860 boils the botanicals along and gives a heavy, full distillate. The Carter Head from 1948 lets the vapour pass through a basket of botanicals and gives a light, floral distillate. Both are used and then combined.

Which Hendrick’s is best to try first?

The regular bottle. If you already know it, Neptunia or Flora Adora is a logical next step; Orbium is the most unusual, with quinine and blue lotus flower.

Which tonic goes with Hendrick’s?

A neutral, not too sweet tonic, with a slice of cucumber instead of lemon. That is also what the house itself recommends.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Hendrick’s abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
