Why here

Rum that is actually arak

Java has its own distilling tradition: Batavia arrack, made from molasses with a splash of fermented red rice added. That rice brings yeasts and bacteria that you do not encounter in ordinary rum. Naga uses that method. Less than two percent of the alcohol comes from the rice, but the character does come from it.

After that the rum first ages in teak casks and only then on ex-bourbon. Teak is the wood Indonesia has; for rum it is unusual.

Why doesn't the brand name its distilleries?

Indonesia is predominantly Muslim and alcohol production is a sensitive subject there. The founder has therefore agreed not to name the two distilleries on Java. We think it is more honest to simply say so than to talk around it.

About the brand

Batavia arrack, and what that is

  • The brand in brief
  • 2013The brand begins with a Thai edition.
  • 2017The Indonesian series is added.

  • TeakThe first cask.

Batavia arrack is one of the oldest distilled drinks to reach Europe; the Dutch East India Company was already importing it in the seventeenth century. It is a molasses distillate to which fermented red rice has been added, which gives it a very distinctive, slightly funky character.

Naga was founded in 2013 by Frenchman Sébastien Follope, first with a Thai range and from 2017 with the Indonesian one. The brand does not distil itself but has its rum distilled at two distilleries on Java.

The Java Reserve spends three years on teak wood and then four years on ex-bourbon. The Pearl of Jakarta gets another year on cherry wood after that. In the tropical climate all of this goes a good deal faster than in Europe.

Fermented red rice alongside the molasses: that is Batavia arak.

Which bottle

Where best to start

The Java Reserve is the starting point and at the same time the bottle that shows most clearly what teak wood does.

The Siam Editions of ten and twelve years come from Thailand and not from Indonesia; that is a different style, somewhat smoother.
